Blood Diamond
“Diamonds are forever” it is often said. For girls, the bigger the diamond ring is, the prouder they are. However, if you know that the diamond you are wearing costs 10 Africans’ lives, you might want to see diamonds from a different view. Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly, is set in 1999 in Sierra Leone where a fierce civil war has killed thousands of innocent civilians and driven more than a million people out of their homes into refugee camps. The money from the sale of the illegal diamonds is funding the arms used in African wars. In other words, the more illegal diamonds you buy, the more money you contribute to the civil wars in Africa and the more people die. Do you know who the biggest consumers of diamonds are? (Scroll down to find the answer) This movie makes people more aware of how consumers have the direct results on things around the world. Every time we buy something, we advocate the way a company does business. Have you seen Blood Diamond? What do you think of this movie? Are you a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio? Can you think of other examples of how consumers’ behavior influences the way a company operates?
