11/8(Sat.) Summer Food Nutrition (Host: Linda Jr.)

文章 Linda Jr. »

Hi, guys. This is Linda Jr. How are you doing?

We are going to talk about summer food this time. Summer is the best time to have fruit since it is a harvest season. Health experts say we should eat at least two cups of fruit every day. And there’s no better time than summer to enjoy this refreshing gift from nature.

Summer cooking methods are light and short, with some salt and more water. On hot days, stir-fried vegetables are cooked at high temperatures and quickly. This leaves the food cooked on the outside and raw inside. On hot days you also use some salt to replace body minerals that are lost through sweating. Broths and cooling herb teas are better drinks when it is hot, than ice-cold drinks. Ice-cold drinks shock the system, and in particular the liver and stomach, obstructing the digestive system.

Avoid stodgy and fatty foods and meals. These interfere with the free circulation of blood and Q1, which is at its maximum in the summer. As temperature rise above 20˚C you reduce your consumption of such highly nutritious but hard to digest and warming foods as fatty meats , oily fish , eggs, nuts, seeds, and grains. You do not cut them out all together: meats, fish, nuts, eggs and grains give a sense of satisfaction. This prevents emotional eating and bingeing and snacking. But once temperatures rise above 20˚C , warming foods should not dominate the diet. Warming foods belong ,more properly, to the spring, autumn and winter seasons. Frying, deep-frying and grilling may hamper digestion. Grilling , moreover, dries the juices in food. This makes grilled food drying. If you insist on grilled or fried meats in summer, serve them with cooling and moisturizing fruits and ovaries such as tomato, cucumber, kiwi, mango , papaya and pineapple. These can either be cooked with the meat or served in marinated side salads. They counteract the warming and drying effects of grilled meats.

Session I:

Q1: Do you prefer cold drinks or hot drinks during summer? What kind of drinks do you love most?
Q2: What kind of food should you avoid according to this article?
Q3: Why people should keep fried or grilled food away in summer? And if you insist on eating such food, what kind of fruits you should eat after having fatty food?

Summer fruits

Mango
Sometimes called the “king of fruits,” a mango contains more than 20 vitamins and minerals. Rich in vitamin C, the mango helps keep colds away. It also provides vitamin A, which is essential for healthy skin and good eyesight.

Pineapple
Known in the U.S. as a symbol of friendship, pineapple fights both lung and breast cancer. This tasty fruit also contains a special substance that help injuries heal.

Watermelon
Watermelon, America’s favorite summertime fruit, can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Like most bright red fruits and vegetables, watermelon lowers the risk of cancer.

Papaya
Amazingly, a papaya tree can grow a seed to a 20-foot, fruit-producing tree in less than 18 months. This fast-growing fruit has an extremely high amount of vitamin A and C. That makes it a “superfood” for your skin and also helps you fight disease. The papaya promotes good digestion too.

Guava
If you’re getting a cold, reach for a guava- it has 80 percent more vitamin C than an orange. If eaten regularly, guavas also lower your blood pressure. Like watermelon, red guavas are one of the heart-healthiest choices you can make.

Session II:

Q1: What’s your favorite fruit? Why ? If it’s not listed here, do you know its health benefits?
Q2: How often do you eat fruit? Do you eat two cups of fruit a day? Why or why not?
Q3: Will you eat more fruit now after you learn how good it is for you? Explain.

hey yoyos,

I add some materials to the article. Hope it is helpful to you.

Create a cool atmosphere aound your meals. Do not eat in the glaring sun, but seek or create a shaded spot. Food should be kept out of the sun. Direct sunlight cause the immediate loss of vital essences or vitamins. This applies to fruit juices as well.

On the hottest days you do best to stick to lighter and smaller meals and to drink plenty of warm fluids such as cooling flower teas vegetables broth. Refrigerated and iced drinks shock the system, in particular the liver. Provided that you do not suffer from stomach heat and overall dryness, you can take some hot spices on the hottest days. These help you sweat. Most people, however, do well to refrain from hot spices, in any time of the year. They embed a conditon called"stomach heat".Stomach heat is epidemic. If you nevertheless insist on hot spicy meals, take them in combination with refreshing and moisturising fruits or salads.Refreshing and cooling vegetables such as radishes, lettuce and local fruit teas help counteract the scalding and drying effect of hot spices is not completely nullified by juicy fruits and salads.

As temperatures rise above 20˚C, you serve more cooling or refreshing foods, such as salads(ovaries),sprouted seeds, fruit, cucumber and tofu. Do not overeat on post-digestive cold foods such as tofu, spinach, bananas, green tea and beer. They prevent sweating. Though tofu and tempeh are ideal meat substitutes in the summer(for healthy people), they should still be taken in moderation(similar to all foods). Their post-digestive nature is cold.(The post-digestive nature of food refers to the effect of foods on the body temperature after digestion.)Taken daily and all the year round, post-digestive cold foods weaken the digestive system of even the most robust people. In moderation they nurture, in excess they damage!Warming herbs such as rosemary, oregano and thyme neutralise the cooling effects of cold food products.

Physically cold and ice-cold foods and drinks should also be avoided. They shock the liver and contract the jaws, gullet, and stomach. This means that digestion comes to an abrupt halt and resumes only when the spleen and kidneys have reheated the stomach. Taken on a regular basis and in combination with meals, cold and ice-cold foods and drinks such as ice-cream deserts and refrigerated alcoholic and soft drinks, weaken the digestive system and cause blockages. Physically cold foods and drinks also prevent sweating. If you do, nevertheless, sweat, this sweating consumes inherent energy. This exhausts the warming, yang energy that you have build up over the winter. In TCM terms, you withdraw too much basic yang-energy from you system. This cools and immobilises your system and leads to internal cold and a vulnerability to colds and other infections.

Hi, everybody:

I think most people like cold beverages. After reading the article, maybe you will reconsider when you make an order next time.

Besides, modern people are so busy that they often forget to eat fruits. Knowning how much nutrition fruites can give you, you will be likely to make it a habit to go to fruit shops regularly.

Do you have some health advice for YOYOs? Please come and share.

Hi, Linda:

It was so nice of you to volunteer for hosting. I shall assist you for making minutes, so that everybody can get some good health concepts on YOYO forum.

The idea of these paragraphs corresponds with the discipline of Chinese medicine. From the viewpoint of Chinese medical science, it is harmful for women to take ice or frozen food. It is especially banned when they are "doing the month".

It reminds me of an experience from one of my colleagues, right after she gave birth to her baby in a hospital in the U.S., a nurse brought her some ice cream "for energy". That's really astonishing.

I have also read a book written by Japanese, which suggested new mothers drinking ice water every morning to help contractions. Now that's culture differences.

After looking up the orignial article, I found Q1 was a typo. The correct one is Qi. Qi means "氣" in Chinese.
