Business Negotiation Game (1/26 Sat)

Dear all,

This is Jason and it’s my honor to be the host on 1/26.
Have you ever watched the famous TV series “The Apprentice(誰是接班人)” and wanted to be one of them? Whether you know or do not know this program, it’s your chance to experience it and it’s fun.

During this game, you will not only practice English but also have the chance to:
1. Learn the negotiation skills to win in the business.
2. Defend your position and influence others.
3. If you are lucky, you will have the chance to say, “You are fired!”

Before you come, please read the story below. During the meeting, you will be a member of KGC team or Ashbury team. The goal of the game is to reach a business agreement. More information will be provided during the meeting. See you on 1/26 and please don’t be late.

The Kim Guitar Company (KGC) in Seoul , South Korea , makes electric guitars for Japanese manufacturers and distributors in Europe and the US . It creates its own branded products but also makes guitars to distributors' specifications.
A major US distributor, Ashbury Guitars, has contacted KGC about marketing a range of guitars under its own. brand name for the Californian market, Ashbury Guitars is a well-established company with an up-market image. It has had no previous dealings with KGC. Ashbury's owner, Richard Grant, plans to put three models on the market: the Ashbury SG1000 (the most expensive model), the SG500 and the SG200. The body of the guitars will have an experimental shape as well as advanced technical features. Ashbury's guitars will appeal to any musician who wants an instrument with a distinctive sound and exotic appearance.
It is now early January. KGC has agreed to manufacture the guitars for Ashbury, even though it is a very busy time of the year for them. The two companies have had some initial correspondence by fax and now a face-to-face meeting is required.
Several points of the contract need to be negotiated. KGCs owner, David Kim has flown to San Francisco to meet Richard Grant. At the meeting, the Marketing Director of each company will be present. The purpose of the meeting is to make a deal acceptable to both sides, and which could be the basis for a long-term relationship.

"The Apprentice(誰是接班人)" is one of my favorite TV programs. We may learn the way how a boss is thinking and become more successful in our working career as well.
Jason Yuan was well known as a model of YOYO. It is highly expected that every participant will be beneficiary from attending the meeting.
You're more than welcomed to be there and experience by your own - the "Apprentice". :P

New words:
CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight)
A trade term requiring the seller to arrange for the carriage of goods by sea to a port of destination, and provide the buyer with the documents necessary to obtain the goods from the carrier.

FOB(Free On Board)
A trade term requiring the seller to deliver goods on board a vessel designated by the buyer. The seller fulfills its obligations to deliver when the goods have passed over the ship's rail.

Letter Of Credit
A letter from a bank guaranteeing that a buyer's payment to a seller will be received on time and for the correct amount. In the event that the buyer is unable to make payment on the purchase, the bank will be required to cover the full or remaining amount of the purchase.

Thanks to Jason’s hosting, topic and interesting games.
We did a lot of negotiation practice during the game and all of us were so impressed by Edward's wonderful negotiation skills, by which he successfully reached an agreement with the tough CEO of his counterpart and accomplished assigned mission.
Followed by that in session 2, Edward demonstrated his proficiency in negotiations again and laid off the poor "Sara".
Everyone was so enthusiastic in discussing the topic that may of us continued our talk for quite a while after the meeting came to an end.

PS. In addition, it also occurred to me following dialogues from the business negotiations:

agree to differ 求同存異
指的是“各自保留不同意見(不再說服對方)”,意即“求同存異”

A︰ What do you mean?
B︰ Considering the major contracts they might give us, I overlooked the small loss.
A︰ So you agreed to differ?
B︰ That’s right.
