7/19(Sat.) Dating (Host:David Jr.)

文章 David Jr. »

Hello YoYos,
This is David Jr. and I am glad to be the host for this coming Saturday on 19th of July.
I haven't been the host for quite a while and hope you can come and enjoy the meeting then.

This Sat. I am gonna talk about a topic related to "dating"
I hosted yoyo meetings 1 or 2 years before with related topics.
This kind of topic is always interesting and inspiring. We can see how other people think differently about something that we may take for granted.
So either you got married, available, not available, semi-available or whatever, you can share with all of yoyos your ideas, concepts or better your own experiences.

The only "must read" material is the link below from Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dating
This give us a basic idea of what is Dating and some related concept.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dating (activity)
Dating is any social activity performed as a pair or even a group with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as their partner in an intimate relationship or as a spouse. The word refers to the act of agreeing on a time and "date" when a pair can meet and engage in some social activity.

In many cultural traditions, dates are arranged by a third party, who may be a family member, an acquaintance, or a dedicated matchmaker. Recently matchmaking services have become popular. Although dating rules in Western popular culture have become more relaxed during the 20th century, there is considerable variation between individuals' values. For example, when the activity costs money, it has traditionally been the man's role to pay; in recent times the practice of "going Dutch" (splitting the expenses) has emerged. Traditional dating activities include sharing entertainment or a meal. In general, a person may date many different partners during the same time period in order to have the best chance of finding their most suitable available mate.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So here we go with some possible discussion questions below,
Session 1:
On Session 1, we will talk about some concept questions,
1. What is your definition of dating?
And what's the purpose of dating?
Think about it.

2. What kind of Dating way have you expereinced before?
Online dating, speed dating, match making, blind dating or others.
What's your thought about it?

3. Dating is an activity.
It means you should do something in order to to fulfil the purpose of question 1.
So share with us what activities you have been through the most before, and what do you think about the effect of them?
Or do you have any crazy or interesting story from your friends about what they did?

Session 2
On session 2, we will talk about more practical and deeper parts.
4. Continued to Question 3, do you think Dating place and timing matters?
Luxury restaurant, Coffee shops, Bar, night market, cooking at home, online, on the phone.
Any recommended one and place?
Weekday, Weekend
Frequency: 8 times a day, 7 days a week, once a week, twice a week, or ramdomly or never... hehe~

5. How do you think about dating different partners at the same time?

6. In dating, does any skill matter? If yes, what skill?
Does money matter?
Does appearance matter?
What really matters?
What's your idea?

Adrian formally joined YOYO today. Let's welcome Adrian!

It's amazing to see that many senior members started showing up in Saturday's meeting just because of the new venue. I've never seen so many participants in 田中園 era. It looks like moving to current meeting venue is a correct decision. :ssmile:

Nice to know that those senior members decided to come out of the woodwork.
This could be a part of their plan to sharpen their dating skills.
Yoyo''s senior member with formidable dating skill can be consider as a tiger with a pair of wings.
I wouldn't let my guard down, if I were you.
I am not abandoning Yoyo, I am just dancing slowly away from it.

I am curious to know who are those with "formidable" dating skills - pretty sure David Jr. should be one of them. :sun:
BTW, the word "formidable" looks scary to me, especially when it comes with dating skills.

If someone comes out of the woodwork, they suddenly and unexpectedly appear in order to take advantage of a situation, express their opinion etc - used to show disapproval. [Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English]

Ex: After he had won the lottery, several old friends came out of the woodwork.

I encountered an interesting expression related to tiger when I tried to look up the expression "a tiger with a pair of wings" - paper tiger.

paper tiger: an enemy or opponent who seems powerful but actually is not

Ex: Is it only a paper tiger, or does it really have teeth?
Ex: The Soviet Union was suddenly revealed as a paper tiger.

As the phrase "come out of the woodwork" is used to show disapproval, if one still says "it's nice", it is used incorrectly, or satirically.

I admire Kooper, who is now quite aware of word usage -- when and where it is appropriate to use a word/idiom. This is the most part for us when we try to improve our English.

Let me just say that...
Senior Yoyo members entitles to all the unconditional welcome in Yoyo.
That is the fact and there is really not a whole lot that can be disapprove of.
Besides, as a 資淺YoYo人, who am I to disapprove those seninor members?

There is indeed an hint of disapproval now that you have mentioned it.
Or more accurately, a disapproval that is infact a praise in disguise.
One can't go thru life without a healthy dose of disapproval from enemy and friends.
No one should feeds on praises for too long, or avoids disapproval like the plague.
Friends are too nice and too kind to say anything bad to you, even when necessary.
That is why you should "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer".
(by Sun-tzu--Chinese general & military strategist ~400 BC)
Who knows the original phrase in Chinese?
I am not abandoning Yoyo, I am just dancing slowly away from it.

Who knows the original phrase in Chinese?
I don't think it is a literal translation.
The original phrase should be 知己知彼 百戰不貽 (孫子兵法: 謀攻篇第三)

Any objection?

What? No ancient Chinese like 孫子 would ever say "敵人是你最好的朋友", that's not even 文言文. Are you out of your mind, Kooper? I agree with Sherry. No problem! She is the best.

Another maxim that mentions friends and enemies that is oftenly used as a backhanded remarks is "With friends like that who needs enemies?"
