8/4 (Wed.) The purpose of love (Host: Bernd Kriechbaum)

Hello YoYo-friends,
I am happy to be the host of this YoYo-meeting on this Wednesday, 2010 August 04. You are welcome to join. This time I have chosen the subject "Purpose of love" and I want to explore with you together the following question: For which pupose do fall people into love and engage in partnerships? I had selected two different documents to put it together to one article. I have chosen a chapter written by Confucius about "marriage", and further a section of the tragedy "Romeo & Juliet" written by the British writer William Shakespeare. I know „Shakespeare-English“ is not easy to read and the text of Confucius also seems to be written in an ancient & special English. Hint: You can read the parts of Confucius also in Chinese, probably easier.......haha. After reading the article, answer the two questions recommended for section 1 and all three questions suggested to discuss on the second section of this up-coming YoYo-meeting. Following the two parts making up the article and the 5 questions.
1. Article: Taken from the “Sayings of Confucius”;
Chapter “On Marriage”.
„The ceremony of marriage lies at the foundation of goverment.
With the ancients in their practise of goverment, the love of men was the great point. In their regulation of the love of men, the rules of ceremony was the great point. In their regulation of those rules, reverence was the great point. For the extreme manifestation of reverence, we find the best illustration in the great rite of marriage. The cermony of marriage was intended to be a bond of love between families of different surnames, with a view in its retrospective character to maintaining the services in the ancestral temple; and it its prospective character, to secure the continuance of the family line. Therefore the greatest men, the ancient rulers, set a great value upon it.
Hence, in regard to the various introductory cermonies: the proposal with its accompanying gift, the inquries about the lady`s name, the notice of the approving divination, receiving the special offerings, and the request to fix the day – these all were received by the principal party on the lady`s side, as he was seated on the mat or leaning stool in the ancestral temple..................
The respect, the caution, the importance, the attention to secure correctness in all the details – and then mutual affection. These were the great points of the ceremony, and served to establish the destinction to be obeserved between man and woman, and the righteousness to be maintained between husband and wife. From the destinction between man and woman came the righteousness between husband and wife; from the righteousness came the affection between father and son; and from that affection the right feeling between ruler and minister......
2. Article: Taken from “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare
Act 2, SCENE II. Capulet's orchard, Romeo says:
[JULIET appears above at a window]
“But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
That thou her maid art far more fair than she:
Be not her maid, since she is envious;
Her vestal livery is but sick and green
And none but fools do wear it; cast it off.
It is my lady, O, it is my love!
O, that she knew she were!
She speaks yet she says nothing: what of that?
Her eye discourses; I will answer it.
I am too bold, 'tis not to me she speaks:
Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven,
Having some business, do entreat her eyes
To twinkle in their spheres till they return.
What if her eyes were there, they in her head?
The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars,
As daylight doth a lamp; her eyes in heaven
Would through the airy region stream so bright
That birds would sing and think it were not night.
See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
O, that I were a glove upon that hand,
That I might touch that cheek!”

Q1: Confucius said that the “regulation of love” between men and women are manifested or disclosed in “the rules of ceremony” of the marriage. Do you agree upon this statement made by Confucius?
Q2: Would you marry someone with the intention to strengthen ties between your family and the partner`s family?
Section 2:
Q3: Read the part of “Julia & Romeo” of Shakespeare in this article. - Do you support the “life-style” of “falling into love” and to develop a partnership through those affections for each other?
Q4: How do you feel if you fall in love?
Q5: What is your personal opinion about the purpose to establish a partnership to a girl or to a boy? Because of his/her money, good reputation, career status, the target to get kids, to educate children, or to take responsibility in the society etc. ? Describe your personal targets?.
