This is Claire Chuang, your host for this evening. We are going to discuss two un-related topics on “teacher-student romance” and “time banking” in Session I and Session II, respectively. The topic for Session I is referred to the following:

Not long ago, the media stirred up a sensation when it reported that 18-year-old Xiao, a college freshman, was dating his 38-year-old cram school teacher, Ruan (阮薏穎). This was revealed the problems of ages, classes and freedom of love. Then, Xiao’s father, the deputy mayor (蕭家淇) was so furious that he called the cram school owner (劉毅) and demanded that Ruan should be fired immediately. Mounting pressure made Ruan to go hiding. Then her boss said she had decided to leave Taiwan and go to China to help develop a new market. In the interview, the deputy mayor said his son was the “victim” of this incident, and he would do everything to protect his son, even if it might sacrifice his own life. One the other part, the media found Ruan at the airport, and she also expressed that she would do whatever it might take to protect the younger Xiao, including giving up her life. “None of us was happy,” posted by the younger Xiao on the Facebook, “I don’t understand the world of adults… we were forced apart with no particular reason.”....

Session One Questions
1. Just in February this year, the Ministry of Education was reported to issue a new regulation, under which all teachers should agree with it and promised that they should not start a relationship with their students when signing their work contract. Do you support this regulation? Please share your opinions and tell us the reasons.

2. Recalling from your memory, have you or your classmates ever admired some teachers and have had a romantic relationship with them?

3. Do you think is it necessary to educate your children before 18 about the healthy relationship between man and woman or even to prevent your children from having a romance with their teacher? If the answer is yes, how do you do?

4. There are some “successful” cases of this issue, like the celebrities (邱毅 or 王文洋) who had a relationship with , or got married with their students. In this case, is it much more acceptable by the public if between the lovebirds one is an older man and other is younger woman? Take yourself for an example. Will you marry someone who is an older woman or a younger man? If you do, how many years of the age difference will you tolerate? No matter you agree with the older-woman/younger-man match, please tell us why.

※Time Banking ※ (Session Two)
Time banking is a pattern of reciprocal service exchange that uses units of time as currency. It is an example of an alternative monetary system. A time bank, also known as a service exchange, is a community that practices time banking.
Time Bank members earn credits in Time Dollars for each hour they spend helping other members of the community. Services offered by members in Time Banks include: child care, legal assistance, language lessons, home repair, and nursing care, among other services. Time Dollars earned are then recorded at the Time Bank to be accessed when desired.

The following is the usage of "marry":

根據"文鶴英語用法字典" (楊景邁著)

中文有"嫁"和"娶"之分,但英文只有一個marry .已下六種用法都對:
(a) He married her. 他娶了她
(b) He was married to her. 他和她結婚
(c) She married him. 她嫁給他
(d) She was married to him. 她和他結婚了
(e) They married. = They were married.

注意:marry 或 be married 後面都不能接with; be married 後應接to
另外,He married his daughter to a rich man. 該句不是 "他和他的女兒結婚", 而是 "他把女兒嫁給一位富人"

Section 1:

The other afternoon I hit a classic mid-afternoon slump. Sleepy and sluggish, I grabbed for a bit of chocolate. But I probably should have had egg whites or maybe a piece of steak.

Because a recent study in mice has found that it’s protein, not sugar, that provides the perk.

Main idea: Start from speaker’s personal experience. Mention a relevant new scientific finding
Question:
1. What happened to the speaker the other afternoon?
2. What did the speaker eat to try to boost his spirit? Was it the right choice?
3. What should the speaker have eaten?
4. What scientists found can make you more energetic?
Vocabulary:
Mid-afternoon slump => slump: a fall in prices/sales/profits etc
Perk => to perk up: to become more energetic, active or happier
Sluggish: moving/reacting slowly than usual

Section 2:

Brain cells called orexin secrete a stimulant that makes us energetic and tells the body to burn calories. If the cell’s activity decreases, narcolepsy or sudden sleepiness is the result. The work is published in the journal Neuron.

Main idea: More about the scientific finding
Question:
1. What cells are being talked about?
2. How do the cells make us energetic or sleepy?
Vocabulary:
Secrete: 分泌
Stimulant: 刺激物
Narcolepsy: 猝睡症

Section 3:

Scientists marked xxx cells in mice’ brains so that they would fluoresce. Then they tracked the cells’ activity after feeding the mice different kinds of food.

Main idea: details of the experiments

2. How did the researchers do the experiments?

Section 4:

Turns out that glucose blocks the function of the xxx cells. This effect might be the main reason for the desired post-lunch siesta.

Main idea: 1st finding

Vocabulary:
Siesta: a short sleep in the afternoon
Glucose: 葡萄糖

Section 5:

But the researchers also found that amino acids stop the glucose action, keeping the cells active and the mice alert.
