08/18 (Sat.) Social Q (Host: Alice Chang)

文章 ALICEWEIWEI »

Dear Yoyo members,
The topic I would like to talk about is “social Q”. And, the article is a New York Times advice columnist talking about his books and opinions about some social conundrums. You may listen to it at blow link.

Section#1:

Etiquette (Cambridge advanced learner’s dictionary)
the set of rules or customs which control accepted behaviour in particular social groups or social situations

Netiquette (Cambridge advanced learner’s dictionary)
the set of rules about behaviour that is acceptable when writing an email or talking to people in a chat room

Question#1:
Have you ever experienced a situation that people don’t reply your text? Or, just disappear on the msn while you are talking? Do you think that is a peeve pat? Or, do you also do the same thing? Please share with us with your opinion
Question#2:
When and where to reply a text or talk to a friend? Bathrooms are still a gray area. Some people feel it’s fine, other people feel it’s quite offensive. What do you think about to be replied when someone is doing their business?
Question#3:
People might have thousands of friends on facebook and I often scratch my head and wonder are those real friendships? And, that makes me wonder about what people’s definitions of friendship is becoming. We not only keep up with our friends but we keep up with the friends of our friends and their friends and so forth and so on. Does that devalue friendship in a way?

Section#2:

Question#1:
Sometimes people might ask inappropriate personal questions such as "why you are still single?" or "when you will get married?"During the interview, the columnist of Social Q had suggested the solution of asking back the person “ why you ask this question?” He thought this gives the person a chance to think the question thoroughly again. In this way he might realize it is not that good to ask such kind of question or ask in this way. How do you take care of this? What do you think be a good way asking back? What would you do if you don't think asking back is a good approach?

Question#2
In the interview, a girl has got a phone call from the woman that his father is having affair with. Shocking!! The author suggests she should call her father and let her father to fix it. Do you think she should tell her mom?
If you saw your good friend ‘s boyfriend or girlfriend dating with someone else. What will you do?
Or, when your friend is asking you for suggestion about private family issue, what will you do? And, if it happened to you, would you like people tell you the true? Or, what you think people should do?

Question#3
There are so many ways to contact with people. Phone, skype, facebook, email, apps…etc. I sometimes get confused which one should I use. What is the method you like and dislike most? Why?
