文章 toshi »

Dear YOYOs,

I am going to be the host in 08/25(Tue.)
Again I am going to use a TED talk as my topic. I hope you will be inspired by this TED talk.
Enjoy it!

If you have problem to see the subtitle, please email me.

Questions for discussion:
Session One:

1. Why do we need education? In your opinion, what should the purpose of education be?

2. What do you think the purpose of current education is? Is it the same as your expectation? Why do these kids need to "suffer" from this kind of education?

3. Do you feel passionate about anything? What are they? What makes you feel passionated about them? Because of any events or you were inspired by someone or your teacher? Please share with us your story.

Session Two:
4. Students are those who are learning. The education has to engage them, their curiosity, their individuality, and their creativity. Do you consider our current education system is trying to achieve that? If no, how to achieve that?

5. Education happens in classrooms and schools, and the people who do it are the teachers and the students, and if you remove their discretion, it stops working. Do you consider our current education system give the teachers enough discretion? What are the pros and cons?

6. What do you think why the education reform is failed? In your opinion, how to succeed?

Sir Ken Robinson is a great speaker. I certainly agree that education is about learning, and each individual is different, the learning process should be different, but unfortunately the current educational systems do not offer the diversity to accommodate the individual difference, instead, it has emphasized greatly on conformity and standardization.

But when we criticize this phenomenon, I do have a question, “If the education is for learning, then, what is the goal for learning?” For me, learning, first, is to know the humanity, secondly, is to be independent. Learning is a process to obtain the sense of humanity, independent thinking and skills to pursue their own lives in the human society.

It could be tricky to tell kids to pursue their own dream if the society does not provide a balanced demand/supply for each individual talent. I am afraid it is very ideal to think we can take care of each individual in a public education system.

This talk totally moved me, which means I'm movable in some way. Cool! The old death valley is not dead! I wonder what those professors and government officials would say if they have watched this video.

The purpose of education in Taiwan, to my understanding, is different from person to person. It can be simply a way to find a job and make a living, or a highly aimed goal to "revive Chinese culture". :? The humanity part is also taken into consideration in our education, but not the mainstream. However, if one can afford the tuition of "forest elementary school" then it's no problem at all.

It's true that the current educational systems do not offer the diversity to accommodate the individual difference, instead, it has emphasized greatly on conformity and standardization. There are two words in my old textbook, formative assessment and summative assessment, which serve different functions. They look like jargon, but actually the meanings are simple-- one is the exams to help people learn; the other is to judge who is better. Our tests mostly fall on the second category.
