1/19(Tue.) Organizational/YoYo Culture (Host:Iris)

文章 Iris Wu »

Dear YoYos:

Time goes by fast. A year ago, Tina passed the torch to us. Since then, we have been thinking about YoYo's culture and traditions, how we can sustain the club's core values and how we can improve the culture where needed. Now a year has passed, and it's time to hand over the baton. It would be nice to hear from our members what they think YoYo's future should hold: what is good to maintain and what would be nice to change. Hope these reflections serve as good reference points for the new leadership team! :)

We probably don't need the whole two hours to discuss YoYo culture, so we will next chat about your company/organizational culture and compare to the "Google culture". Though we may not be the VIP at work, I do believe each individual has his/her influence. Maybe that is something we can strive for as one of our New Year's resolutions?

What is “Organizational Culture”?
“Organizational culture encompasses values and behaviors that "contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of an organization."
"Organizational culture represents the collective values, beliefs and principles of organizational members and is a product of such factors as history, product, market, technology, and strategy, type of employees, management style, and national culture. Culture includes the organization's vision, values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits." – Wiki

Questions
Session I: (The YoYo Culture)
1. What is the YoYo's culture? Please list 3-5 elements that you think represent the YoYo's culture (either good or bad). Compare it to other English clubs: Anything in common and anything that sets YoYo apart from others?

2. What are the YoYo's traditions and practices that you think we should keep and maintain, and why? What are the ones that you think we should improve or change, and why?

3. What actions do you think the new leadership team should take to make YoYo a better English club as well as a social club?

Session II: (Your Corporate Culture)
1. What is your corporate/organizational culture (at work)? How do they affect your work?

2. Compare to Google's digital culture,
  • - Data-driven in decision making
    - Agililty: tons of experiments and tests and celebrate failure
    - Supporting its Culture: innovation and autonomy, forward thinking, teamwork and feedback
    - Balancing innovation and business results:
    - Rapid prototyping in action
Does any of the above exist in your organizational culture? (Don't be sarcastic! :) )
Please elaborate your organization's decision making processes, agility, and how they support innovation and employee's feedback, etc.

3. What culture would be nice to have in your organization? How would your company and your work benefit from this kind of culture? If you are part of the management team, what would you do to improve/change your corporate/organizational culture? (You can reference the following article and see if any of the “Organizational tools for changing minds” are applicable.)

I'd like to say that Iris has reshaped a Yoyo culture of her own. It may not be so colorful or crazy, but it's warm, friendly and intelligent. If she can be here for another 10 years, like Kooper has been, Yoyo shall be long life and prosperous.

It's an honor and pleasure to have you here, dear Iris.

Wow! I am thrilled! These words came from Rock! I thought I am pretty colorful and a bit crazy, why I don't get credit for that?

I am humbled by your kind words. I would say whatever I did at YoYo is truly based on YoYo's nature. If YoYo members are not genuinely sincere and friendly, I won't be able to make the atmosphere warm; if YoYo attendees are not intelligent, it is not possible for me to create intellectural conversation and dialogues in the group.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this group in the past year and I truly believe YoYo has the tradition to find its own course and will always grow in a natural way. The way has been unintentionally nurtured by people who care about it and love it deeply. As long as these people are around, YoYo should be still one of the greatest English clubs in town!

Yeah, let's do something crazy and colorful sometimes. I guess you haven't join our live music pub tour yet, right? It's about time to have one now. Come on, Brown Sugar or Oldies Goodies, you pick one. 8)

Unlike other English learning groups that have founders to set and keep the tone, the founders of YoYo have moved on to next stages of their own lives and literally turned their backs on the club. Losing the founders have turned out to be a blessing in disguise really. It leaves YoYo the luxury to grow on its own. As a result, YoYo has a varied culture. For one, it is largely shaped by incumbent president and vice president. Sometimes it was academic and learning-oriented. Other times it turned very sociable and fun-oriented. It experienced ups and downs in its turnout but is doing well now, thanks to Stacy and Iris! For another, the culture is also a product of all the active participants of that time. YoYo members come from all walks of life. Not surprisingly, they come with varied goals and traits and shape the club collaboratively. It's like a collective creation. Everyone has their part to play.

After saying all these, does it mean there is no single element of culture that persist for all the years?

i don't know what culture it is but, "freestyle", "variety" and "adaptability" must be the linchpin of it i would say, though they some how have the meaning "change" in themselves, which might sound not that persistent haaa~
i might be a cynic and, a sceptic as well but, i'm definitely not a bad person!!
