2/23(Tue) Introverts and extroverts (Host: Douglas)

文章 Douglas »

Session One
https://www.theguardian.com/science/qui ... -introvert
Please take the following test. Count the score, which is the number of the sentences that describe you correctly.

1. I prefer one-on-one conversations to group activities.
2. I often prefer to express myself in writing.
3. I enjoy solitude.
4. I seem to care less than my peers about wealth, fame and status.
5. I dislike small talk, but I enjoy talking in depth about topics that matter to me.
6. People tell me that I’m a good listener.
7. I’m not a big risk-taker.
8. I enjoy work that allows me to “dive in” with few interruptions.
9. I like to celebrate birthdays on a small scale, with only one or two close friends or family members.
10. People describe me as “soft-spoken” or “mellow”.
11. I prefer not to show or discuss my work with others until it’s finished.
12. I dislike conflict.
13. I do my best work on my own.
14. I tend to think before I speak.
15. I feel drained after being out and about, even if I’ve enjoyed myself.
16. I often let calls go through to voicemail.
17. If I had to choose, I’d prefer a weekend with absolutely nothing to do to one with too many things scheduled.
18. I don’t enjoy multitasking.
19. I can concentrate easily.
20. In classroom situations, I prefer lectures to seminars.

The score shows your tendency towards being introvert or extrovert. The higher(lower) your score, the more introvert(extrovert) you probably are. The nearer to 10 your score is, the nearer to being an ambivert you are (yes, there really is such a word).
Questions:
1. How many members of your group are characterized as being introvert/extrovert?
2. Do you agree with the descriptions about introversion? What are the most and the least precise ones? Do you think the test is accurate about you or your group members? Why?
3. How do you tell whether yourself or others are introverts/extroverts? Are men more extrovert, and women more introvert?

Session Two
Please watch the Ted speech by the author of the book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking(中文書名:安靜,就是力量), which provided the test above:
http://www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the ... uage=zh-tw

Questions:
1. Are the extroverts or introverts more possible to prevail or succeed at school, work, and the society in Taiwan, like the speaker said about the U.S.? Why?
2. Do you like more to get along with introvert or extrovert friends? collegues? What about when making a couple? Why?
3. Please share some expierence that you get along or cooperate with introverts or extroverts.
4. Do you think we can do some changes for ourselves or schools/workplace, to improve the interaction with the introverts?

I scored 15 points.

As a matter of fact, I don’t even need a quiz to tell me that I am an introvert. I’ve learned it well since childhood. As a kid, while my younger brother dauntlessly showed off his eye-catching kung fu postures in front of friends and relatives of my parents, I only dared stand quietly behind. My shyness was so pronounced that it worried my mother; to build up my guts, she started asking me to run errands for her, like buying her eggs or condiments from grocery stores, or forcing me to attend one lecture contest. Even today, as a full-grown adult and a seasoned worker, I still get tongue-tied and have butterflies in my stomach whenever speaking to a crowd. It just goes against my grain.

Does the trait of introversion put a damper on my career prospects? Hardly, I would say. It does place some constraints on what I can do for living; a case in point: obviously I cannot live by delivering inspiring speeches or putting on stand-up comedies. The constraints, however, have been too often overstated. In these day and age, most jobs require varied skills to excel in and God is fair in that no one can be all-around. Being weak in one or two aspects of a job can hardly be fatal, unless it is crucially needed.
