8/2(Tue) A class about ambiguous words (Host Andre's)

文章 tashi »

Hi All,
Some time ago I found some words that their meaning are the same but also seem to use in different ways, like trustworthy and reliable.
As a result, it occurred to me that Andres' is not only native speaker but also English teacher. So here comes the class from him:

Session I.

‘Bored’ vs ‘boring’.
‘Must to’ vs ‘have to’.
‘Fun’ vs ‘funny’.
‘To’ and verb vs -ing.
Borrowing vs lending.
‘Wait me a second.’
‘There have many people.’ vs ‘There are a lot of people there.’
‘He’ vs ‘she’.
‘Where do you come from?’ vs ‘Where are you from?’
‘Where is here?’ vs ‘Where are we?’
*

What? You also you have own ambiguous collections? Bring them into the session and let's share, clarify together.
Be sure to write them down though.

And for the second session we can watch this video https://youtu.be/Mh6dTVfHNVI

And discuss the following questions

1 How much time do you spend at work?

2 Do you communicate with your boss before you go to work or after you leave work?

3 Do you communicate with your boss on your days off?

4 How do you spend time when you are not working?

5 Do you want to spend less time at work and more time on other things?

6 Do you want to spend more time with your friends?

7 Do you want to spend more time with your family?

8 Do you feel like you give too much time to work?

9 Do you give time to work that you don't get paid for?

10 If your friend tells you that they spend too much time at work, what would you say?

Try not to use translator or English-Chinese dictionaries to distinguish words. They often do more harms than good.

According to Oxford Learner's Dictionary:
Cow is a large animal kept on farms to produce milk or beef = 乳牛or肉牛 = 農場眷養的牛(單數)
Bull is a male cow = 公牛
Ox is a bull that has had part of its sexual organs removed, used, especially in the past, for pulling farm equipment, etc. = 被閹割的公牛, 耕田的牛
Cattle are cows and bulls that are kept as farm animals for their milk or meat = 農場眷養的牛(複數)
牛群 = a herd of cattle, a herd of cows

Great! Now I want to be a cow expert. For the animal in the above picture,

1. Is it a cow or bull? If it's been castrated, would it be called an ox?

2. May I say it's a bull cow? How about its wife? A cow cow?

3. Why do we have "the year of Ox" and "holy cow"?

Some notes for your reference:

Bored vs. Boring.

Some thing is boring
Some body feel/is/get bored

Need to = have to =must=be supposed to

Must is a bit formal and strong
be supposed to is lighter, and more gentle than have to

EX.
I am supposed to be YOYO's host tonight but I am happened be to unavailable then, so I must find someone help me with this.

You are supposed to arrive at office by 8AM.

Shall vs should vs will

Shall could be used for a stronger "will", used in a protocol, aggrement, contract with concern of obligation.
Shall could be used for formal request like "Shall we dance?"

Should could be used for expess something better to do but no nt a must.

EX.
It's slightly rainning though, I don't have to take an unbrella but I should have it by my side.

Fun vs. Funny

Go hiking is fun.
Watching funny movie to have fun.
This guy is funny (could be posive or negtive(means strange), )
This guy looks funny (negative, means you poke fun on this guy)

Funny vs. Interesting vs. Intriguing

Funny --->make you laugh
Interesting ---> make you think, more interllectual
intriguing ---> not only make you think, also brings up your curiosity to know more

Sometimes they can be used on the same thing but sometimes it doesn't.
Something make interests you but it doesn't make you do for for it.

It's a pity that we didn't finish the whole list, maybe everyone can propose more ambiguous examples and we can hold another class to reveal the correct way.

Many thanks. I especially found the word "interesting" interesting; it's interesting that we don't have a Chinese counterpart of this interesting word.
