9/3(Sat)Is Taiwan a Developed or Emerging Country?(Host:Dan)

文章 Iris Wu »

Is Taiwan a Developed or Emerging Country?

Is Taiwan a developed country, like Japan, Singapore and Australia; or does it resemble more an emerging country, like the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand?

By many measures, Taiwan is indeed a developed country: with per capita GDP of $46,800, a life expectancy of just under 80 years and an infant mortality rate of only 4.4 per 1,000 live births (The World Factbook, CIA).

But for organizations that research, track and evaluate global markets, such as MSCI, FTSE and S&P, Taiwan’s economy and capital markets are emerging.

And for some visitors and residents, Taiwan, with its uneven enforcement of building codes and noisy, clogged, scooter-filled streets, feels like an emerging, not a developed country. Moreover, perhaps in the minds of many older Taiwanese, it never stopped being an emerging country.

Questions for Session I:
1. Based on your experience living in Taiwan and traveling to other countries, do you consider Taiwan a developed or an emerging country?

2. What is needed so that people won’t even ask the question of whether Taiwan is a developed or emerging country? For example, does Taiwan need to:
-- Improve access for foreign investors to its financial markets?
-- Improve enforcement of its building codes to remove cheap and illegal additions and structures?
-- Improve its infrastructure, including adding or upgrading green space, sidewalks, gas lines, water and electricity capacity?

3. Do many Taiwanese, especially in the older generations, have a sort of emerging-country mentality, as suggested by the linked Forbes article? That is, do some Taiwanese people hoard resources and pinch pennies because they remember a time when resources were scarce?
