9/6 (Tue.) Technology improve our lives? (Host: Josh)

文章 Josh »

Have advances in technology improved our lives or are we becoming too dependent?

Tesla driver dies in first fatal crash while using autopilot mode

The questions for discussion:
Q1. Do you like to have a car coming with autonomous features, like Tesla Model S in the article, when it is available in Taiwan? If you have one, would you be very alert when setting it to an autopilot mode?
Q2. Could self-driving modes make street safer than manual ones? When you are driving, would you feel nervous if you are aware of self-driving cars around you?
Q3. In your opinions, is it proper for automakers to release semi-autonomous features (like automatic braking or autopilot mode) incrementally to the public in their new generations of vehicles? Or should the car industry wait until fully auto-driving technology is ready?

Q4. Will fully automated vehicles become a reality? What may be the biggest problems for the autonomous vehicle industry?
Q5. Should driverless cars be programmed to kill the passengers in the car to save the lives of padestrians? Should a driverless car decide who lives or dies in a crash?
Q6. For you, is autonomous vehicle technology exciting or terrifying? In your opinions, what are the fanciest technologies nowadays? What technologies or products would you like to have most in life??

Technology sometimes improves our lives, but sometimes not. it really depends on if we know how to take advantage of it.

as to the example Sherry provides, i find it quite interesting that most of those research participants think autonomous vehicles should be programmed not to hurt pedestrians, even the passengers on the vehicle would get killed because of that programmed decision. morally thoughtful, right? but, when it comes to their own choice, many of them don't want to buy this kind of cars. guess it really shows what human nature is, doesn't it? 8)

by the way, personally my answer to question 5. is, driverless cars should be programmed to prioritize pedestrians' lives over passengers' when encountering such kind of dilemmas, because the passengers have made the choice to use the car so that they have to take the responsibility themselves. however, it seems quite not feasible haa, so, just got a question, if you encountered a dilemma like this when driving a car, what would you do/react?? guess this might be able to answer the question lo~
i might be a cynic and, a sceptic as well but, i'm definitely not a bad person!!
