5/27 (Sat.) The Benefits of A Bilingual Brain (host: Jessica)

Dear yoyoers,
It's Jessica's hosting this coming Saturday FINALLY (Julian couldn't help say the word "finally" when I announced to host the meeting. :sun: )
Would people who speak more than one language be smarter in other ways? New research indicates that the brains of bilinguals can adapt more quickly to change stimuli than the brains of monolinguals. It’s obvious that knowing more than one language can make certain things easier — like traveling or watching movies without subtitles. But are there other advantages to have a bilingual (or multilingual) brain? Mia Nacamulli details the three types of bilingual brains and shows how knowing more than one language keeps your brain healthy, complex and actively engaged. Please check the clips below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMmOLN5 ... e=youtu.be
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZANBvuS_iDU

Session one:
1. Is bilingual a common part of your community? Is it supported by peers and adults around you?
2. Now we have established some of the advantages of the bilingual brain. Do you agree that children learn languages more efficiently than adults? Where do you think that can be done to foster early second-language learning, at home or in school?
3. Why would having a bilingual brain delay the onset of certain diseases and increase abilities in multi-tasking and problem-solving?

Furthermore, let's also see the interesting clip about "Things Bilingual People Do" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReHdQsB5rI8). People think that being able to speak multiple languages is one of the coolest skills you can have in life. In the video, we noticed that some of our bilingual friends sometimes do things like talking about other people secretly or eavesdropping on conversations, finding some words are hard to translate or some expressions that can't be translated well, teaching people your language (in a wrong way  ), switching languages mid-sentence, not satisfied by subtitles, instant connection with native language, speaking an expressive language and sounding you're upset when you're not.

Session two:
1. Did you relate to any of these? Share your experience.
2. Are there any others the clip missed? Such as talking to yourself in your second language when no one is around, speaking your native language when you're upset, or curse in your mother tongue. What about you?
3. If you have a chance to learn a new language, which one would you like to learn, and why?

To know more about the topic, Jessica have prepared for you.

Based on the theory of use and disuse, it seems only logical that bilingual, or multi-lingual people should be smarter or having less risks on brain diseases. But I wonder if it's a fact. I mean, you do know Japan is a monolingual country and Singapore a multilingual one. Are Japanese more stupid or suffer more from Alzheimer's disease than Singaporeans?

Bilingual shall be smarter, but would it be healthier? I got a question mark as well. Most of Taiwanese speak two languages. Comparing with most American, we might consider our self genius bilingual( mandarin, Taiwanese, part of English). We are supposed to live much longer than most of American, aren't we?

In the workplace, bilingual is pretty good tool to keep the secret from foreigners who don't know Chinese. But I found that nowadays more and more foreigners know Chinese than ever, so better watch out next time say something bad in Chinese behind their back.

Another good things about being a bilingual is when watching English movie, you get to see more details on acting which might bring u more emotionally attached to the film. (try not to see the subtitle of course)

For me, the advantage of learning a second language is to know more people and open a window to other fields. That's very interesting!
But speaking of increasing abilities in multi-tasking and problem-solving, the effect is minor. If you really want to develop those abilities, I guarantee that being parents and having more jobs must help.

I'm curious that.....
when people speak their native language in front of you which you don't understand,
1. what's your feeling?(Ramesh should tell us, haha) :D
2. people from which country like to do that?

Julian was right, "finally" we get Jessica to host! And it is a shame for us to wait for so long! Jessica wrote the statements and questions beautifully, she should have "voluntold" to host meetings long ago! :)
I am swamped, but definitely need to make time for Jecaca's meeting!

Right, as Gloria said, bilingualism probably won't make people smarter, more capable in multi-tasking, or prevent Alzheimer's disease in great extent. I certainly don't expect it helps me fight with my senior moments or the possible dementia in upcoming years! I am just grateful that the basic second language skills helped me well-situate myself during the years of challenging work environment.

Yes, Iris is right. Although Jessica worried about it a lot, the meeting actually ran smoothly and was a lot of fun, as usual. Many thanks to Jessica and everybody who joined us.

Shoot, I'm aging, really. Just forgot the attendee list. Let me think, we had Jessica (host), Julian, Iris, Laura, Rock, Gloria, Vincent, Zelda, Alex, Danny.... Who do I miss?
