7/8 (Sat) Free-Range vs. helicopter Parenting (Host: Sherry)

文章 Sherry Liao »

Dear YOYOs,

Long time no see. It’s a great honor to be a host again. Yesterday I had a chat with a colleague about how much control we should exert over our children, and it seems that the opinions diverge. I hope I can also learn from your opinions on this topic, no matter you have children or not. See you this Saturday!

Please read this article before the meeting:
Parents investigated for neglect after letting kids walk home alone

Questions for Discussion
Session I

Q1. What is your opinion on this article? At what age will you allow your children to walk alone to school without an adult guardian? Why?
Q2. Where do you place yourself on a spectrum between “free-range parenting” and “helicopter parenting”? Please explain the reasons you take your position.
Q3. To what extent will you allow your children to venture out in the world? If your teenage child tells you that he/she is going to travel overseas alone, will you allow him/her to do so? What if the countries he/she is going to visit are with high crime rates or at wars?

Session II
Q4. Today's parents are more anxious to land their helicopters on children. What are the possible reasons for that?
Q5. Is school performance important? Will you expect and try to help your children to achieve academic success? Or will you let them explore their talents and discover their own aspirations?
Q6. Will you raise your children the way your parents raised you? If so, why? If not, how will you raise your children differently than the way your parents raised you?

I guess it's a bit too early for that 6-year-old girl to have this adventure, but it also depends on what kind of neighborhood they live in.

As for the teenager traveling thing, if a kid wants to go abroad and sees the world, and the parent happens to be able to afford it, then just do it. As long as they are not going hiking in the Himalayas....
In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.

good topic!! unfortunately guess i won't make it.. :ccry:

anyway, if i were a father, i would teach my kids to learn right from wrong and safe from dangerous first, to see if they were able to deal with those possible situations they might encounter on the road. of course people might say it's easier said than done, but still we got to try our best. and on top of that, we have also got to know our kids very well. if you can really understand them, things will be easier for you to handle, when it comes to your kids. so, in the case mentioned in this article age is not the problem really, unless they are too young to walk themselves haa~ but then again, Rock is right, it also depends on what kind of neighborhood they live in. and to venture the world that will be another story lo~
i might be a cynic and, a sceptic as well but, i'm definitely not a bad person!!
