[8/15 Tue] Natural farming become solution? (Host: Tashi)

文章 tashi »

#Session I:

First of all, let’s start with a lovely story in the following link which was the very beginning of natural farming:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klDatZk-zX4

And here I quote a paragraph of the talk that excites me:

“A farm that doesn't feed its animals, and a farm that measures its success on the health of its predators. A fish farm, but also a bird sanctuary.”

As a warming up session let me also try to bring up some questions:

1. Do you believe in the future human can still enjoy fresh food/meal or we are destined to eat highly processed / fruit with pesticide residue?
2. What’s best food (seafood, pork, beef, vegetable or fruit) you’ve been enjoyed and what is the image they left for you? Please elaborate the factors you noticed like freshness, cooking skills.
3. Is there any meal you love a lot but feel guilty to eat them because they are endangered species? (Toro, Muntiacus reevesi and so on.)
4. Do you think the way they implemented in Spain has a strong opportunity be applied globally? Why yes or not?

Session II

You may also have heard of the story 青森 apple in Japan:

As I remembered, by the time he finally got success on his business and uncovered his story, the public admire his consistency and though he invented a new farming methodology. Actually, the way he planted his apple is sort of natural farming methodologies and as the article mentioned, he was inspired by the book written by Mr. 福岡正信.

Moreover, there are two important things to know:

There are two pioneers of natural farming in Japan, Mr. 福岡正信(Masanobu Fukuoka) and Mr. 岡田茂吉(Mr. Mokichi Okada).

Most farmers running natural farming techniques are following the philosophy and methodology developed by Mr. Okada and it’s called 秀明自然農法(Showming natural farming methodology)

In general, all of the current natural farming methodologies follow the principles below:

*No chemical material involved or even no organic fertilizer used.
*Discover and align with natural laws to keep both the variety of plants and animals
*Recover the active and vitality of the soil.

Now here are some questions to discuss:

1. What is the difference between natural farming and organic agriculture or they are the same thing?
2. Do you have any experience buying or eating products from natural farming? What is your image?
3. Do you have friends running this kind of business? How is their life and what they have shared with you?
4. Is it possible for you that natural farming methodologies can be applied by most farmers in Taiwan?
5. Would you consider being a farmer running natural farming in the future? If yes, what is the angle or motivation?
6. In addition to natural farming methodologies developed by those two pioneers in Japan, do you have any idea for other pioneers in other developed countries?
7. When it comes to the principle of natural farming, would the principle look like a sort of education for human/children?

Now I believe Tashi can be a good chef, or even a CEO in a farming company. He really has passion on these things. Great!!

Many people also care a lot about food. I hear natural agriculture a lot these days but not really know what that is. I bet Gloria and other good housewives are knowledgeable about it. 8)

this topic is quite intriguing, if not serious.

guess the intention of those who use natural ways to manage their farms is good, but then, if in the end they are going to sell their product to the public, i wonder, what the price will be? will it be too high to afford for the general public. and so become high end products only for riches? guess those companies who use not so natural way to feed or grow what they keep is because it's a business for them. they need to keep their cost down so that the businesses can be profitable and the companies can be sustainable themselves. that's to say business is business. i really don't know how these environment aware agriculture would develop, and how it will meet ordinary people's requirement, mostly the price i would say, if it's without the help of a government?

yeah, all in all the idea is good. we really need to take this issue, sustainable food and our health, seriously since the resource on earth is limited, but then again, i'm a cynic and, a sceptic haa~
i might be a cynic and, a sceptic as well but, i'm definitely not a bad person!!
