1/30 (Tue.) Six Unrelated Questions (Host: Georgia Lu)

文章 Georgia »

Hello fellow members and guests,

I have a perfect reason why I chose six "unrelated" questions... or are they? Hmmm... the truth about my hidden agenda will be unravelled in the meeting, so stayed tuned and come find out why!

In order to walk you through these questions, I recorded a short film for your reference. Please feel free to view, review, share, or copy the link. All rights reserved. Thank you. :D

Session I
1. Almost everyone has their own ritual for something. Some people pray before they eat, and some people have to finish their morning run before going to work. What rituals do you have in your daily life?

2. In a lifetime, it is inevitable that we will experience all kinds of rituals and ceremonies, such as worshipping the Gods, graduation from school, weddings and funerals. If you can plan your own wedding or funeral, what will your plan(s) look like? Please share your ideas with us.

3. Let’s say we believe all humans go to Hell after death (since nobody’s perfect). In the Korean movie Along With the Gods, they gave Hell a brand new definition on a whole new level. The rules and characters in the “bad place” were nothing like the stories we were told when we were little. If you were the God who creates Hell, what’s your design? What will your Hell be like? Please feel free to be very descriptive as to what kind of person gets what sort of treatment.

Session II
4. Speaking of movies, where do you usually choose to watch a movie you are interested in? Why? If you want to see a movie in a movie theater, what are the top three features or qualities, such as service, big screen, ticket price, comfy chairs, location...etc. that you care about the most? Why?

5. Since we’re talking about movie theaters, let’s take a walk down memory lane. Do you remember the first time (or the earliest time you can remember) you went to a movie theater? Which movie theater was it? What movie did you see? Who did you go with? Did this event mean something to you or hold a special place in your memory? Why?

6. The fairy tale Beauty and the Beast was not only massively demonstrated in children’s books but also in films. Some people would even use this phrase as a metaphor when an unattractive man and a beautiful woman are truly in love. A man I used to date has a theory that goes like this:
Pretty women are most likely to end up with unattractive men because pretty women are mostly spoiled and short-tempered, and only unattractive men can handle their attitude, whereas unattractive women are rather pleasant and easy-going, which maximizes the possibilities of scoring a handsome man in a relationship because handsome men prefer to stay with a women who exhibit this kind of personality.
Question: Do you agree with this theory? Why or why not?

Q6

This question made me think of some yoyo male members' conclusion about the conditions of a perfect girlfriend.( Don't force me to reveal who those male members are.) They said the perfect girlfriend should be "家貧中美好棒棒"。That means they must be from poor family, medium beautiful, and easygoing. Do you agree with it?

LOL! That's just something I'm trying, which is highly related to my career plan. So I thought hey, why not test the waters here? It's a win-win situation because I''ll be trying ways to make propaganda work for this club as a thank-you gift for sheltering me through the years when I was practically a crippled speaker when I took my first step to polishing up my speaking skills, if I had any back then.

I guess each host has their unique style of conducting a meeting. Hopefully my pitching in can help initiate more brilliant ideas or followers to carry on the torch! Yay! Don't you think recording a video is a VERY good way to practice speaking skills? After messing up and having to redo a dozen times, you'll feel like everything except giving up. :D
(I seriously need to work on my eye contact and smile)

HMMMMM...
On that note, I would like to reveal the fact that on Wednesday night before the meeting, I took a detour to the Mr. Brown Cafe nearby, where I saw, a whole bunch of gorgeous men sitting in there drinking coffee. So I went inside to look around the premises to make sure just how many handsome men there were. They spread out in threes or twos almost everywhere. One third of them were foreigners. They're not even posing but they looked so fine like they just jumped out of a GQ magazine. It also seemed like all the pretty men within a 5-mile radius were hiding out there, I mean, what are the odds? (Unless it's a gay cafe) I guess further field research is necessary? That would be such a great place to hold the women's meetings we talked about. Just saying...LOL....

Sorry, I tried to post your video, but it just won't come up. But then I tried this video from youtube, it goes well. I don't know why. All I did was taking out the "s" in "https"

No worries Rock. For the time being, I plan to make the video visible on other platforms so that we can attract potential new comers, then bring them back to the forum.

Kooper, my dear old friend, I think you are ready to take your learning approach to the next level:
Stop writing down notes!

Every time I see you do that when I'm speaking, I seriously want to throw something at you because you'll be missing the good stuff and fun when you're too focused on taking notes. Don't pressure yourself into gargling down everything you hear. Your English is already too good to survive the basics, so it's time to move on. Taking notes is for beginners because they need to fill up their word banks, and I highly doubt you're a beginner.

Listen very closely and then let it go.
Listen very closely and then let it pass.
Listen to some more materials again and again.
Eventually, new phrases/words/expressions will become familiar. This is when you look up the dictionary to read more details. Then, let go. If you're not so sure you know it well enough the next time you hear/see them again, the dictionary is always your best go-to pal. (BTW I use more than 5 dictionaries which are all written/edited by native English speakers.)

Let them come to you, sink into your brain, and settle into your long-term memory. One day they will pop into your mind when you're talking. Before you know it, you're already using them like the way you heard it. And the best news is, it will be hard to get rid of them, let alone forget them. Hope this helps!
