Dear friends,

At the Mar. 24 meeting I’m hosting we’ll try something a bit different again from our usual format - games and activities with some learning mixed in. Hope you'll like it!

To get the most out of this experience please prepare for the meeting as much as you can. Thanks!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Natural speech

After the meeting on "accents" some have asked me about the subject. Accents, unless being so strong as to be hard to understand, is not crucial to what makes someone sound more “natural,” which I think is the goal for most learners, especially Yoyoers at such a high level. What really helps with natural speech is the conversational routines and fixed expressions we use to convey common messages.

The article below explains it really well if you’re interested in what a language professor has to say (NOT required reading!) :D

Assignment No.1:

How do we ask for favors / help? Here’re 3 great examples of "conversational routines.” They sound simple, but can you say them naturally without having to think much (an indication of having internalized the “routines”)?

Please listen to the lesson file below. Record yourself making one of the 3 phone conversations. Mimic the tone, intonation and speed of the speakers. Have a partner or talk to yourself. Please bring the recording on your cell phone to the camp.

2. Synonyms

It often seems that with our growing vocabulary comes also the growing confusion – what’s the difference between refuse and reject? And if we look up a thesaurus, we find at least 47 more synonyms under “refuse!”

Is it hopeless then? We’ll try to hammer away a few of them, and have some fun while at it. :D

Assignment No.2:

Here’s a list of synonym sets learners often misuse. Since synonyms share similar definitions, the best way to learn them is to find them in sentences. Please look up how the words are used. Pick a set and prepare. See if you can explain the usage of each word from the set.

(1) (v.) refuse, reject, deny, turn down, decline
(2) (v.) rate, rank, grade, score, weigh, prioritize
(3) (n.) effect; impact; influence; consequences
(4) (v.) appreciate, value, prize, treasure, cherish
(5) (n.) intent, intention, motive, motivation

There are many ways to find the words in action. Here’s one site with simple examples:

We’ll have small discussions beside the games. Hope you can take away a few useful words and expressions!
