7/14(Sat) Hear Yes! More Often (Host: Kooper)

It is fair to say that we are no stranger to the power of influence. In our everyday life, people are either influencing others or being influenced - be it done intentionally or unwittingly. It is a key competence in leadership, sales, parenting, negotiation, team building, and conflict resolution, to name but a few. When there’s a new kid on the block, such as a new coworker who's just on board, did you ever be the first to reach out to them and ended up winning a life-long friendship? If you are the type of people who think it’s cool to use an iPhone, drink coffee at the Starbucks, or equip your apartment with a variety of IKEA furniture, ever wondering who and what make you believe so? Being influential and persuasive seems to stand us in good stead in modern societies and make our lives a lot easier. On the other hand, knowing these techniques could prevent us from being manipulated by others into doing or buying what we don’t really want to do or need. Now, let's learn what scientists have found and become a master of influence. May the force be with you!

Hear Yes! More Often With the Science of Influence

Questions for Discussion
Session One:
1. According to researches by Dr. Robert Cialdini, what are the six principles to influence people? In your experiences, which of the six principles is the most effective in persuading others? In addition to the six, do you have any personal recipes for effective persuasion?

2. Who do you have a particular soft spot for and it's most challenging for you to turn them down? Does his or her irresistibility to you fit any of the six principles?

3. How do you persuade people in a way that's not pushy and avoids hurting their feelings? Have you ever been successfully persuaded into doing something willingly? How did they persuade you?

4. How do you persuade people who don't like you, or strangers, into doing what you want them to do?

Session Two:
5. What's the line between ethically influencing people and manipulating people? Does even ethical influence pose threat to the intactness of individual autonomy?

6. Have you ever used emotional blackmail as one of your persuading tactics? How did it work out?

7. In which way does persuading people in authority, such as our parents, teachers, or supervisors, differ from convincing our peers or partners? Does it require any special techniques if your persuasion targets are adolescents or kids?

8. Share us one of your major successful or disappointing experiences when it comes to influencing others. Did you use any of the techniques introduced by the speaker?

Here's two more questions I'd like to pitch.
※Have you ever been successfully persuaded into doing something willingly? How did they persuade you?
※Have you ever used emotional blackmail as one of your persuading tactics? How did it work out?

Hi Georgia,

Thanks for bringing the two questions to the table. They have been added to the question list. I particularly go for the one on emotional blackmail. It gives us a new perspective to weigh in on the topic.

It is probably hard not to influence or be influenced in this neatly interwoven society, unless you can live completely like a hermit. Sometimes I feel the most effective way to influence others is to plainly convey what you truly believe or experienced in the context that is relevant to your audience or more precisely, relevant to the value system of your audience.

The line between influence and manipulation sometimes is thin and blurred. The intent, the process and the impact are keys to be carefully examined. Emotional blackmail is probably more common than we realized. I definitely have a good one to share in the meeting. :)
