9/8(Sat) Five laws of human stupidity (Host:David Jr.)

文章 David Jr. »

Hello Everyone,

This is David Jr.
I am glad to be the host for next Saturday on 8th September and we are going to discuss an interesting theory about human's stupidity.
See you soon!

Simply put:
圖檔
Law 1: Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.
Law 2: The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
Law 3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.
Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.
Law 5: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
And its corollary:
A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.

Questions for session 1:
1. How accurately does this theory reflect the actual social behaviors?

2. If we follow the author's definition of stupidity, which is Law 3, what do you think the population proportion of stupid people will be like?
Don't forget Law 1 about underestimated number as always and Law 2 of stupidity being independent of any other characteristic.

3. This author also claims that education has nothing to do with the probability of stupidity. A stupid person was born a stupid person and nothing will change his/her nature and a stupid person exhibits extrordinary consistency in acting at all times with unyielding idiocy.
3A. What do you think about above statement?
3B. Could you give some real examples of stupid people and explain what they actually did?

4. The non-stupid are a flawed and inconsistent bunch. Sometimes we act intelligently, sometimes we are selfish bandits, sometimes we act helplessly and are taken advantage of by others, and sometimes we're a bit of both.
4A. Have you played all three roles in your life?
4B. What role do you play most frequently?
4C. How often do you change your role?

Background knowledge for Session 2

圖檔
Please refer to above figure of matrix.
The line POM divides the area B into two sub-areas, B1 and B2, and the area H into H1 and H2.

The bandits who fall in B1 are those whose actions yield more profits than the losses they cause to other people. All bandits positioned in B1 are bandits with overtones of intelligence and as they get closer to the right side of X axis they share more and more characteristics of intelligent person.

On the other hand, the bandits who fall in B2 are those who actions yield less profits than the losses they cause to others. All bandits positioned in B2 are bandits with overtones of stupidity and as they get closer to the down side of Y axis they share more and more characteristics of stupid person. One typical example of bandit in B2 is someone kills you in order to rob you of fifty pounds.

The same pattern happens to the two sub-groups of helpless: the helpless with overtones of intelligence (area H1) who yield less loss to themselves but more profits to others and the helpless with overtones of stupidity (area H2) who sacrifice more in return for less gain to others.

Questions for session 2:
5. Could you find some real examples of bandits in B1 in real life and what they do?

6. Could you find some real examples of helpless in H1 and in H2 in real life? How do we distinguish these two sub-groups?

7. The author claims that all actions falling to the right of the line POM add to the welfare of a society but the actions falling to the left of the same line POM cause a deterioration.
7A. Do you agree with above statement?
7B. Should we encourage the behaviors of bandits in B1?
7C. Shoud we encourage the behaviors of helpless in H1?

8A. What do you think the population proportion of intelligence, bandits and helpless might be in Taiwan?
8B. What do you think the population distribution of the intelligence, bandits, helpless and stupidity respectively on the matrix?

If wisdom accrues with age, then I think I’m most likely entitled to fit into the category of non-stupid; moreover, I’m not a blonde bombshell! However, grasping the article and tackling those well-designed questions just like a one-two punch that knocked me out into the group of the stupid!

Looking forward to being lifted from stupidity with some wise answers in this coming Saturday’s meeting!

As usual, David picked an "interesting" topic. Just by browsing his previously-picked topics it is easy to tell that David is a man who tries to get hold of the world using methodologies!

No worries Janice. A one-two punch won't knock you out because you are as good and resilient as Manny Pacquiao. :ssmile:

I guess one of the reasons that people tend to behave stupidly by the definition of the third law is because misery loves company. We feel pain or envy when seeing other people hit the big time when we’re in a bind or “just fine.”

A second possibility is that calculating men may act in ways that seem to benefit themselves in a short term but unwittingly hurt their reputation in the long run, which pull them down from the category of “bandit” to “stupidity.”

Hitler was a bandit (B) when he launched the war and when Germany was winning. Then he became a stupid (S) when Germany lost the war. So, he was a BS.

Hi Rock, this is a smart play on words. I guess there are a lot more people who intended to be a bandit but ended up being a stupid. They were not born S but nurtured BS!
