9/11 (Tue.) The Power of Rhyme (Host: Devry)

文章 Devry »

I am Devry, hosting for the first time at Yoyo English Club on 9/11! I always like to try something a bit different from the norm so this is what we will run with for 9/11. Will be editing this throughout the week, stay tuned.

Session I: The Power of Rhyme
For our first session, we will be throwing discussions out the window. I would like to bring everyone back to my high school English class as I bring to those attending a small lecture: The Power of Rhyme!
The reading packet below is what you will need come Tuesday. Hope everyone is ready for a little recitation too! Through these pieces I wish to introduce to people the types of rhymes used and what they can be used for.
Some old rhymes
Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty
Beer before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before beer, have no fear.
Betty Botter - Carolyn Wells
Betty Botta bought a bit of butter;
“But,” she said, “this butter's bitter!
If I put it in my batter
It will make my batter bitter.
But a bit o’ better butter
Will make my batter better.”
Then she bought a bit o’ butter
Better than the bitter butter,
Made her bitter batter better.
So ’twas better Betty Botta
Bought a bit o’ better butter.
Lose Yourself - Eminem
His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti
He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready
To drop bombs, but he keeps on forgettin'
What he wrote down, the whole crowd goes so loud
He opens his mouth, but the words won't come out
He's chokin', how, everybody's jokin' now
The clocks run out, times up, over, blaow!
Prologue of Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.

The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;

The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
Ring Verse - J.R.R. Toikins
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
Session II: What makes English (or other languages) so hard to learn?
As almost all of us are learning a foreign language, surely there must be a lot of complaints, I would like to hear what others have to say about their language learning experiences.

Questions:
  1. What was the most terrible experience you had learning a language?
  2. What do you think is the hardest part of learning a language?
  3. What was the best advice you ever received for learning a language?

Good to know that there is an unconventional host like Devry at YOYO.
I always like to be amazed by someone who likes to provide something different from the norm. However, to say I was surprised is an understatement, I was absolutely stunned to see “The Power of Rhyme” as a hosting topic. No idea how you are going to lead us through Eminem’s and Shakespeare’s masterpiece . Can’t wait for your debut and have us attuned to your galaxy selections.
