10/6 (Sat.) How reliable is the media? (Host: Sherry)

Dear YOYOs,

Recently I read an article on ABC News’ Interactive Digital Storytelling about how they make a fake video with the help of artificial intelligence:

Can you tell a fake video from a real one?

The outcome is spine-chilling – fake news can be spread not only via text and images, but videos! Are we entering an era where we might need to question everything we read, see and hear?

What is even worse, researchers have found that it is not easy to tell the difference between fake news and facts:
Think You Can Tell Fake News from Real? New Study Says 'Think Again'

and that it spreads much faster than true news:
Fake news spreads much faster on Twitter than true news, study finds

Described as “ubiquitous presence”, Collins Dictionary picks 'fake news' as Word of the Year 2017. So what should we believe? Please come join the meeting and tell us your belief this Saturday!

In Taiwan's media history, we had 腳尾飯事件 and 涂醒哲舔耳案烏龍事件.

The first one was made up by the guy who was running for city congressman. The media just covered the news, so the media did not make up the news itself.

The second one was a mistaken identity, and the congresswoman 李慶安 apologized for the mistake.

To me, the above two incidents are not "fake news", because the media did not make up the news by themselves.

However, after internet was invented, anyone can spread "news", and if it is sensational, then it goes viral. When this kind of fake news goes viral, and the media does not cover it. Then it is not a fault of the media. Here the media means traditional ones such as TV news station and newspapers.

If we want to talk about the responsibility of "media" like Facebook and Twitter, then it is another story.
Why? Because the original function of Facebook and Twitter is not to report news as the traditional media does.

I noticed that there’s one type of fake news that is particularly contagious in Taiwan and it spreads largely in the digital world via our social connections – by friends and relatives of ours with seemingly good intentions. Surprisingly, they're not on politics, but health.

In fact, not too many Taiwanese feel comfortable spreading political news or comments; the subject remains either sensitive or provocative to bring up; by sharing them we also inevitably reveal where we are at the political spectrum, which potentially could drive a wedge among friends and families or put a relationship or job opportunity on the line, especially in a seriously partisan society like Taiwan.

Sharing the news on health, on the contrary, is in itself a gesture of goodwill and normally makes the sender looks caring and knowledgeable. Not every health information goes viral. Only health claims that sound intuitively correct, but has never been widely accepted or proven by medical academia, would cause a buzz. They are usually claimed by some self-proclaimed medical experts or doctors as if they are the only one who have the wisdom or expertise to hold the Holy Grail of health.
