When it comes to time management, we often talk about how to do more things within a given time. What set this speech apart from other time management instructions is that it hit the nail on the head by spending time only on things that really matter to us. In short, it all comes to identifying one’s true priorities and allocating proportional time to them.

Of course that’s easier said than done, or there won’t be so many bestselling self-help books on personal growth. The first hurdle is the challenge to find one’s real priority. Men are greedy and often attempt to achieve too many goals in one time frame. The list simply goes on and on. As a saying puts it, “when everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.” Admitting that our time and energy is at a premium and ruthlessly curtailing our wish list may hurt our complacent feelings but is a necessary evil. It unearths what core values we truly uphold and what kind of person we really want to become.

Even with a reasonably doable priority list in place, how to make it happen in real life is another story. There has been many useful techniques taught by experts. We can even find a bunch in TED talks. The speaker herself shared several good ones: plan next week’s schedule on Friday afternoon and fill in things that count first; execute them with the sense of urgency as if a water heater has broken and our house is flooded. There has been SOP offered, why it is still challenging for people like me to follow?

What these approaches demand in common is an organized and disciplined personal traits. Unfortunately, not everyone are born to be organized. Also, it has been theorized by psychologists that there are two monkeys in our brain : one is instant gratification monkey and the other rational decision-maker. The process of pursuing the set goals is often not very pleasant – the pleasant ones should have long got done and don’t require all these troubles to make it happen. When it comes to not-so-pleasant tasks, the instant gratification monkey usually gain the upper hand.

That's the sad truth and is the reason why topics like time management, decision making, goal achievement is a lifelong lesson. :cccry:

Session 2
Q5
Making girl/boyfriends is a short cut to learning everything and contacting with other cultures. But, it also needs a lot of courage because trans-cultural relationship/marriage is a big test for most people. However, bigger challenges, much more excitement. Why not give it a try? 8)

A revised version:
When it comes to time management, we often look to do more things within a given time. What set this speech apart is it hit the nail on the head by asking us to spare time only for things that really matter. In other words, better time management all comes down to identifying one’s true priorities and allocating proportional time to them.

Apparently that’s easier said than done, or there won’t be so many bestselling self-help books on personal growth. The first hurdle is the challenge to find one’s real priorities. Men are greedy and tend to shoot for too many goals at the same time; the list simply goes on and on. As the saying goes, “when everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.” Admitting that time and personal energy is at a premium and ruthlessly curtailing wish list may hurt our complacent feelings but is a necessary evil. It unearths core values we truly uphold and the person we really want to become.

Even with a reasonably brief list in place, how to turn it into reality is another story. It’s not because of the lack of tools or methods; there has been many useful techniques taught by experts; we can even find a bunch in TED talks. The speaker herself shared several good ones: plan the coming week’s schedule on Friday afternoon and fill first in things that count; do them with a sense of urgency as if a water heater has broken and your house is flooded. There has been SOP offered, why is it still challenging for people like me to follow?

What these approaches demand in common is an organized and disciplined personal traits. Unfortunately, not everyone have a head for staying organized. Also, psychologists say that there are two monkeys going toe-to-toe in our brain all the time: one is instant gratification monkey and the other rational decision-maker. The process of pursuing the set goals is often not very pleasant – fun ones should have long got done and don’t require all these troubles to trudge ahead. When it comes to not-so-pleasant tasks, the instant gratification monkey usually gains the upper hand.

That's the sad truth and is the reasons why topics like time management, decision making, goal achievement is a lifelong lesson.
