9/10 (Tue.) Cyber Attacks (Host: Miller)

文章 miller »

This is Miller, your host for the meeting on 9/10.
Do you know what cyber attack is and how it works?
The attacks can be classified into 2 categories roughly by the purpose of attackers.
The first kind is to attack the particular organization or target, for example the nuclear power plant/the aircraft.
The purpose is to make the infrastructure out of operation, it usually exists between different countries or organizations.
It's not for ransom but to destroy the opponents or get some confidential information.
The attackers are well organized, for example the cyber army between Taiwan and China.
Another kind is to make money from the victims, for example the scam or ransomware.

According to the report by Symantech in 2018, Taiwan suffered more than 5% Targeted Attack, only next to USA(27%), India(12%) and Japan(8%).
The most attacks Taiwan suffered are from mainland.
There are more than 8 million people in the cyber army of China, the amount of Taiwan is just thousands people.
Although it is a long distance between Taiwan and China, Taiwan can defend our country well.
The cyber war is totally different than the traditional war.
It is more dependent on the technical abilities.

According to another report - Juniper Reseatch, the lost of cyber attacks in the world will reach 2 trillion USD.
The average loss of attacked enterprises is about 4M USD, they usually find it after 200 days.
All of these victims seldom disclose what is the damage, even most victims don't know the severity.

Where do the cyber attacks come from?

Session 1:
1.Do you believe that one country with cyber army will become the strong country? Is it likely to declare the country having nuclear weapon?
2.To face the big team of hackers from opposite site, do you agree we have to build up a cyber army?
3.What is your opinion about the hacker's purpose to attack other organization?
4.In the dark world, the hackers are organized well like a mafia. Should they exist in the world or the government should destroy this existence?

Session 2:
Based on the discussion in session 1, you should know the severity of cyber attacks.
In this session, we discuss about what should we do to protect ourselves.
The following link enumerated several tips for us.
Safety instructions
https://www.urgencequebec.gouv.qc.ca/En ... taque.aspx

1.The cyber attacks are happening every day and every where, do you ever encouter this situation. If you had the experience, please share with your table mates.
2.The more convenient, the less secure. Between the convenience and safety, how would you choose and how much can you sacrifice?
3.Some countries decrease the development of internet and filter the messages you transfer on the internet to avoid the cyber attacks. Would you agree this way?
4.Did you ever hear someone wanted to make money by this way? If one of your friends told you, she/he wants to be a hacker, how would you do?
5.If one organization will provide you 3M NT for 1 year to be a hacker in Taiwan, would it touch your heart?

the following is an excerpt from one of the articles above,

"The problem with cyber warfare is that its very hard to work out who launched the attack in the first place. In many cases, nobody will claim responsibility for the attacks and while it may be possible to speculate based on the geopolitical situation, there will never be a solid answer, particularly as states will find it easier to cover their tracks than individuals. In others, hacking collectives may quickly take responsibility, but while it's often strongly suspected these are 'state sponsored' attackers, the strength of direct links with an antagonistic state can be hard to prove."

guess there's not much we ordinary people can do about cyber attacks, especially if it aims at infrastructure kind of targets, but one that we are able to do is to cautious about the information we get. as the article mentions, it's very difficult to know who launch the attack in the first place so, one of the cyber attacks that seriously causes disruption of our life is false flag i would say.

we now live in an information explosion world. our behaviours and decisions might be easily influenced by those information we receive. what makes things worse is it could be a false flag trying to mislead us, if i didn't get it wrong. in other words, we might be manipulated by those political opportunists. just imagine we are being inundated with the powers that try to change and control us without noticing it, through daily information. that's why i think false flag is the top priority to deal with.

solution? just bear in mind it's very difficult to verify who launch the attacks so, find the logics. and be cautious if you find the information is important and going to change your mind. otherwise, being a sceptic is the best choice lo~ 8)
i might be a cynic and, a sceptic as well but, i'm definitely not a bad person!!
