9/24(Tue) Thinking, fast and slow

文章 Timmy »

Dear friends,

In this book, the author has a quite interesting idea to separate our thinking into 2 systems: fast, automatic system 1 and slow, logical system 2.

He also cautions us against relaying too heavily on the fast but not always reliable system 1. Otherwise, we may fall into the trap of many fallacies.

Thinking, fast and slow is a thought-provoking book; if you have time, I highly recommend it.

For this meeting, we will discuss 5 biases mentioned in the video: anchoring, science of availability, loss aversion, framing. and sunk cost.

Session One: science of availability, loss aversion, and sunk cost.
Questions for Discussion:

When people are in fear, they tend to let the system 1 take over: they will act quickly but sometime irrationally. This behavior might help our ancestors survive since there is not time to hesitate when facing hungry lions. However, in modern society we don't usually face many life threatening situations as our ancestors did. But still many people are living in consistent fear because they are suffering from science of availability, loss aversion, and sunk cost.

1. Do you read news everyday? Are you afraid of taking a flight because of learning an airplane crash? Are you fearing that something bad will happen to you after watching a terrorist attack on TV.
2. Do you invest any money in stock market? Are you willing to sell a stock if its price is lower than it was when you purchased it? In other words, will you cut losses? Or you will just keep it and believe one day the price will go up again.
3. Sunk cost is a very common fallacy since many people are proud of being frugal. Do you think that throwing away an item you purchased is a wasteful behavior?

Session Two: anchoring, framing, and two systems
1.If you are trying to purchase a TV in a brick and mortar store, how will you determine it is overcharged? If the salesperson told you that he could give you a special discount such as 50% off, will you think twice before you buy it?
2. If you are going to deliver a bad news to your family members, how will you do it? Do you have any personal experience of using framing as a technique to make others feel better?
3. How do you process every day information? Do you believe every thing you watched on the news? If you don't, how much time and effort will you willing to spend to find out the truth?
