10/15 (Tue.) Climate Change + Creativity (Host: Kat & Lydia)

Dear friends,

With the UN Climate Action Summit 2019 just concluded — and our task of saving the planet (and ourselves!) barely begun — I'd love to add to the conversation another look at the issue. And we'll even make it fun with games and various discussion formats.

Plus, what brings about that illusive magic called "creativity?" Can we learn to be more creative? Indeed we need new ways of thinking for this fast-changing world and its numerous challenges. Come be creative together!

On Climate Change:

One of the best books I've read recently on the issue of Climate Change is The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming by David Wallace-Wells.

★ A NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE

"In his travelogue of our near future, David Wallace-Wells brings into stark relief the climate troubles that await—food shortages, refugee emergencies, and other crises that will reshape the globe. But the world will be remade by warming in more profound ways as well, transforming our politics, our culture, our relationship to technology, and our sense of history. It will be all-encompassing, shaping and distorting nearly every aspect of human life as it is lived today." (Amazon)

Some quotes from the book:

“Though climate change will be given its ultimate dimensions by the course of industrialization in the developing world, at present the world’s wealthy possess the lion’s share of guilt—the richest 10 percent producing half of all emissions.”

“But more than 10,000 people die each day, globally, from the small-particulate pollution produced by burning carbon. This is not even broaching the subject of warming and its impacts. A rule change to pollution standards for coal producers, proposed by Trump’s EPA in 2018, would kill an additional 1,400 Americans annually, the agency itself acknowledged; globally, pollution kills as many as nine million each year.”

“Fourteen of the world’s twenty biggest cities are currently experiencing water scarcity or drought. Four billion people, it is estimated, already live in regions facing water shortages at least one month each year—that’s about two-thirds of the planet’s population."

On Creativity:

The Cambridge Dictionary defines "creativity" simply as:

"The ability to produce or use original and unusual ideas."

The interesting part is to "use" original ideas. Sometime it's not about coming up with things never existed before, but to rethink, reframe, repurpose, or even remake existing products or ways of thinking. Let's explore!
