Dear friends,

Many thinkers have questioned if, in the modern world of “work to live,” “money is not everything, but everything needs money,” we truly have any real and meaningful freedom or control over our lives.

And what about people who are left out in this worldwide monetary competition? If the total global debt in 2018—averaging $32,000 for every person on earth—is one measure of how well the system is working, should we reconsider its usefulness and sustainability?

Let’s talk! We'll use various formats for our discussion, plus a game or two to make it even more fun.

Nobody would think Kickstarter would work 100 years ago. I believe people 100 years in the future would teach their children "once upon a time, there is a thing called money. People work for it to make a living." But of course it's on the condition that we survive this virus thing.
In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.

Hi Rock, great comments!

I think this outbreak could end up disrupting our consumption-driven economy to such a degree that some people may start questioning just how sustainable the system is, if we have to go through the same thing every time there's a global health crisis—lockdowns, market crashes, school closings.

With our destruction of animal habitats and the Climate Emergency being the causes of the increasing emergence of new diseases, we will only see more frequent outbreaks, and possibly more deadly ones too.

In the final analysis, is our overconsumption the root cause of it all? Can we live in a way that does not harm the natural balance of the ecosystem? We must think hard and act fast while we still can.

I find this article really helpful in considering the link between Climate Emergency and the new diseases:

"Climate change will make animal-borne diseases more challenging to predict"
