Important Notes:
1. We advise participants to print out the discussion questions and bring them to the meeting for reference. As for the supporting articles, feel free to print them out, as well, according to your preference.
2. We suggest that participants read the articles and think about the questions in advance.
3. Newcomers should prepare a two-to-three minute self-introduction in English to deliver when called upon by the host before the start of the discussion. The host may also ask you to give brief feedback about the meeting at the conclusion of the meeting.
4. We conduct the entire meeting in English. All participants should have at least moderate English-conversation skills and be able to articulate your ideas for each discussion question.
5. We welcome newcomers and other guests to attend the meetings and join the discussion freely for three times. After that, we hope you will consider becoming a YoYo English Club member. We charge a NT$1000 lifetime membership fee.

Depression is a psychological outcome of chemical imbalance in the brain. Factors that lead to the chemical imbalance ranges from genes, stress and trauma, complications of other physical or mental illnesses, to social isolation. In some cases, people with depression don’t even have a “reason” to be depressed; a guest in a podcast episode that I once listened to shared that he started suffering from insomnia since entering college and two years later he suddenly fell into bottomless depression for no particular reason.

Among the seven skills of coping with depression without meditation, what I found most helpful are exercise, food and social support. Regular cardiovascular exercise boots the level of dopamine in brain, which is a better-known pleasure-induced neurotransmitter. I grab some banana or sweet snack whenever in a blue mood; we've learnt well since childhood that sugar makes us feel happy; banana is rich in serotonin and vitamin B6, both of which work together to shore up the amount of serotonin the brain can produce; serotonin, like dopamine, is another brain chemical that improves our overall feeling of well-being. Human are gregarious animals. It goes without saying that leading a healthy social life brings us happiness.
