(ONLINE)8/3 (Tue.) How to make hard choices(Host: Miller)

文章 miller »

Hi all,
We usually get the problem of how to make a hard choice in daily life.
It's an important lesson we should learn in our life.
So I chose an old topic in 2020 and 2016 - how to make hard choices.

1. TED talk: How to make hard choices

2. (Optional)Article: The Right Way to Make a Hard Choice.

Questions for Discussion
Session One:
1.What's the speaker's definition of hard and easy choices? Are hard choices always big according to her?
Could you share an example of a small but tough choice that you have made recently?
On the flip side, share with us a big decision that you made before but that was a no-brainer
Did you experience hard choices that didn't fit her definition? What is your definition of tough decisions?

2.The philosopher mentioned several myths in making hard choices. What are they and how did she reason to debunk these myths? Do you buy her reasoning?

3.What advice did the speaker make when it comes to making hard choices? According to her, what option do people usually turn to in tough decisions? Do you agree with her theory and suggestion?

Session Two:
1.Do you consider yourself a drifter when it comes to major life decisions such as career, education, finance, marriage, parenting, and others?
Have you made any hard choices that follow the philosopher's advice? In hindsight, were they good decisions? Did those decisions make you become the kind of person you were pursuing, as she suggested?

2.There are many decision-making theories proposed by management experts. A simple google search brings us countless pieces of advice on how to make tough decisions. Please pick one of the theories and share it with us.
What are your tips on decision-making?

Bring it to top!

Good topic and questions to help our decision making process!
If any good advice, the current YoYo Book Reading group discussion on the book, "Thinking, Fast and Slow" and mindfulness meditation seems to benefit most readers in realizing intuitive, automatic reactions and how our "System 1 thinking" works and how it causes biases and jumping to conclusions in our daily activities.

Maybe hard decisions tend to invoke the "System 2 thinking" (slow thinking, more rational and effortful mind operation). Overall, the self-awareness of our thinking processes, I think, helps us clear our mind in making choices and judgments.

Thanks for Iris's advice.
Most of us run out of ways to deal with the hard choices, but the ability is necessary to go through daily life.
Listen to others' sharing and practice by ourselves is actually an efficient way.
Hope more YoYos can come to join us and share your experiences with others kindly.
Even you already joined the same topic in past years, I believe you can learn something different with different people.

I finally got the time to listen to the TED Talk.

She is a philosopher. The speech is not so much on "how to make hard decisions", instead it explains that we create our reasons for our choices, and it reflects who we are. It's an attitude, be grateful and appreciative for the opportunities of hard choice because they made us who we are.

The book I mentioned previously is more on the psychology side. It uncovers our thinking processes, and identifies our vulnerable intuition to biases, so when we face "choices", we can examine the alternatives and "create our reasons" with more rational and informative effort.
