Time: What is it? And how does it work?

Dear friends,

The ongoing pandemic has imposed many changes on us—of our lifestyles, work patterns, social life, and many more—in ways we may only come to fully appreciate in time. The impact comes not only as a result of the fast-moving physical circumstances, but also from the function of "time."

Some of us find time seemingly crawling most of the time. Some mourn the loss of time. Some feel more in control of their own time, while others struggle even more against the race of time.

So it got me thinking more about how time works—or does not work—for us. Our relationship with time, and our fight against time (and aging!) There’s also a fun side to time.

Just think about the sci-fi works that try every way imaginable to alter time: it has been bent, rewound, reversed, duplicated, multiplied, expanded, started over, or outright ended. Heroes and villains travel back and forth and trigger all kinds of crazy butterfly effects. History gets revised. Future gets remapped. Dreams fulfilled or shattered.

Philosophy and science have also found plenty to say about these thought experiments. From Aristotle to Einstein, from time warp and wormholes to the latest quantum theory, time touches all intellectual disciplines as surely as it does every aspect of our lives. With technology and medicine we may one day find ourselves the master of time. But one question remains: what are we doing with our time?

This non-stop, seemingly eternal, but never enough entity that we call time has fascinated and frustrated us forever (as in “all the time!") It's about time we face time head on (with games and more!)

📌 What we know about "time":

"Time is the continued sequence of existence and events that occurs in an apparently irreversible succession from the past, through the present, into the future." (Wikipedia)

"In Physics, the Greek thinker Aristotle spelled out a fairly modern-sounding definition of time as “the calculable measure of motion with respect to before and afterness.” This idea of time as a fixed sequence of events would survive with only minor modifications until the work of Einstein in the early 20th century. Did time have a beginning? Aristotle balked at the notion, instead viewing time as unbounded." (Quanta Magazine)
