We have been thinking about adding variety to our regular meetings. Here comes the opportunity.
On 4/12, we invite a guest speaker, Jason Peng, to give a brief presentation (15-20 min) on “Machine Learning”.
Jason was born in Taiwan but grew up in Canada. He just returned to Taiwan last year and is currently working at Google, Taipei.
Since Jason won’t arrive at Dante until 8:00 pm, we are glad to have our beloved English teacher, Kat, lead the first session. She will do an activity to get us to think about and discuss this subject. So the first session will be like a warm-up for Jason’s talk in the second session.
Jason has made a few slides, which cover some technical info, but the majority of his speech will be more general or controversial aspects of machine learning for an accessible discussion.

Discussion Questions:
Session I:
For the first session, Kat will lead an activity to start our exploration of machine learning, and ask a few questions:
1. From Google search to facial recognition, machine learning—for machines through experience and use of data to improve performance—is very present in our life. Can you give a few examples of everyday technology that you think utilize machine learning?
2. Accuracy and performance remain big goals for machine learning. How would you score the two contenders in our first activity?
3. What are some of your biggest frustrations when it comes to using a new “smart device?” Can you give an example?
Session II:
The guest speaker, Jason Peng will give a brief presentation, and then, we can have a group discussion or Q&A session with Jason.
4. Do you trust machine learning to power a self-driving car?
5. Who is responsible for the machine learning’s actions? (The creator of the data, the creator of the algorithm, the one using machine learning… etc.)
[Notes: The examples of "machine learning's actions" are:
a) In the context of spam, say, machine learning removed a very important email that resulted in me losing out on some business. What venues can I pursue to seek restitution for the damages?
b) In the case of a self-driving car, if it hurts someone, who is liable? ]
6. Do we really need machine learning and is it beneficial to society?
