Animal Welfare and Animal Rights 03/02/2005 [Wednesday]

Animal Welfare and Animal Rights 0302 2005 Wayne

From the Protest against Fur Garments to the Pets Cosmetic Surgery

While the issue of human rights is rising higher, how many of us have been aware of animal rights? We're going to discuss three things: (1) should fur garments be banned, (2) should animal stunts performed in circuses be banned, and (3) should the pets cosmetic surgery be banned?

Session I
1. An animal welfare society recently aired in public how some animals were skinned alive for the material of fur garments. A picture showed a raccoon that was looking at its own skinned body. What a shocking, horrible, and disgusting scene! Meanwhile, more than 100 named celebrities, including the First Lady, were spotted wearing fur garments and were harshly condemned. However, Master Hsin Yun stepped forward and defended that wearing fur garments per se would not be a crime. I am sure that he is against cruelty to animals, but is it guilty, or not, to wear fur garments when the animals' skins are obtained in an ethical way? Why do people like to wear fur garments? If you can afford a genuine fur garment, will you buy one and wear it? After all, should fur garments be banned?

2. Circus performances are often an attraction to children as well as adults. In addition to the trapeze shows and walking on the high rope, animal acts are also very popular among the audience, including the monkey show, tiger taming, dog jumping through the ring of fire, and other animal stunts. The shows may be amazing and entertaining, but during the training, the trainers allegedly are treating these animals cruelly. Some people such as animal rights activists say these animals are not born to amuse the human beings; therefore, forcing them to train for entertainment for the human beings is cruelty to the animals. Do you agree or disagree? Similarly, some animal rights activists voice that sea animals, such as the dolphins in Vancouver Aquarium, should be returned to where they belong. Do you support such idea? Why or why not? After all, should animal stunts performed in circuses be banned?

Session II
3. It's true that some pet owners want their pets to look better so they take their pets to a animal hospital for cosmetic surgery; however, others think this is unnatural and cruel to the animals. West Hollywood, California, has recently banned cosmetic surgery on pets. What would the veterinarians do to the animals? Do you believe that pet owners can speak for their pets about what they want to look like? Do you agree or disagree with this cosmetic surgery idea? After all, should the pets cosmetic surgery be banned?

4. What do the acronyms of APAOFROC, TRAFFIC, SPCA and PETA stand for? What do they do? Do we have such organizations in Taiwan? What can we do to contribute to these organizations?

Please "do your homework" and prepare your lines. If you need vocabulary, please let me know.

Dear YOYO members,

Angel 會盡量早一點來參加聚會~
(不過, 因為我不加班的下班時間已經是6:30囉,
如有遲到, 還請大家多多包含!!)

Angel 準備約15 個老婆餅,
(先到先發囉~)
希望大家都很開心ㄛ!!
