Not sure if I get it right. Here is my interpretation.

"I want the thing shining" could mean "I want the thing that is shining now" or "I want the thing to shine."

"I want the thing which shine" means "I want the thing which could shine."

Actually, I don't know and that's why I brought it up.

For ""I want the thing shining"", why isn't it ""I want the shining thing"?

However, I would translate them in different ways.
"I want the thing shining" 我要那東西(弄得)亮晶晶的。
"I want the thing which shine" 我要會發亮的東西。

Not sure if the two sentences I translated mean the same thing or different things.

I haven't watched that video... but my idea is as follows:

1. I want the thing which shines = I want the thing shining.嗎?
-------->後者不符文法吧! 關係代名詞是代表主詞的話 是不能省略的
2. I want the thing shining 與 I want the shining thing 一樣嗎?--------->所以既然前者不符文法, 這個問題就不成立嚕 XDD
3. I want the thing to shine. 其實有代表the thing不一定會發亮 而只是你要the thing 可以發亮

能將形容詞放在名詞後面形容或是修飾的情況, 只有 不定代名詞 如: something/someone/anyone……才是後面接形容詞用後位修飾。

I want the thing which shines.
I want the shining thing.
I want something shining

I want the shining thing.
I want something shining

1. Let me have an example here.
"I don't like children who steal."
Can we put it "I don't like children who is stealing"?
Then after we take "who is" off, it becomes "I don't like children stealing."
It looks all right to me.
Besides,
according to 文馨活用英漢辭典, the word "want" does use the patterns V + object + V-ing and Subject + Verb + Object + p.
I don't want others interrupting.
I want the job done at once.

2. Yes, there are cases that you can put an adjective after a noun (otherr than something/anything/someone/anyone).
A. America proper, court marshall, knight errant, attourney general, president elect, just to name a few.
B. In the sentence pattern Subject + Verb + Object + Complement, "Complement" can be a noun or an adjective.
I want my coffee hot.
The police want to nab the murderer dead or alive.

Wayne,
你寫的這句是成立沒有錯, 文法也對!
不過就" I want the thing which shines = I want the thing shining"這個, 即使改成I want the thing (which is) shining. 我還是覺得不太對....
我想那是因為你用了want這個動詞! want是 想要(v.) 某人/物(o.) 做~事(o.c)
因為想要人/物做事情 不應該"正在發生",所以不太可能會有這樣的句型
我想對於WANT而言~~ O.頂多可以用to V.R或是(to be) P.P來修飾......
對其他不完全不及物動詞 也許ok吧.... 我想~~

Besides,
according to 文馨活用英漢辭典, the word "want" does use the patterns V + object + V-ing and Subject + Verb + Object + p.
I don't want others interrupting.
I want the job done at once.

雖然辭典裡寫了...但我還是很少找到這樣的用法ㄟ..... @@
I don't want others interrupting. ----> 這是詞典裡的例句啊? 我怎麼覺得看起來很像Chinglish.... XDD 一般不是會說I don't want to be interrupted by others.
I want the job (to be) done at once.

學到了! Thanks.
不過例句我會看成是這樣....
I want my coffee (to be) hot.
The police want to nab the murderer (to be) dead or alive. (話說...這句整個不訂詞片語to nab the murderer dead or alive.是want的受詞)

p.s.
瀏覽看到這個....

不知道有沒有關聯...... 還是如裡面所說的算是不正式的咧? XD

Hi, Tina,
The complement "shining", a present participle, has the function of an adjective. Do not take it as a verb.

All right, let me have another example.
The family of the murdered victim want the murderer dead. {The family of the murdered victimwant the murderer (to be setenced) dead.}
Is this OK?

It does?
In Collins Cobuild English-Chinese Dictionary, the verb "want" does use the pattern of " V + O + V-ing.
It may not be commonly seen, but it is correct usage.

I think so. However, I'd rather trust the lexicographers of Collins Cobuild Dictionary than the netizens on the forum/Internet unless they are acknowledged authorities.
