Apparently and idiomatically you don't need a broom to sweep.
According the dictionary, here are the definitions of "sweeping"
1. Having wide-ranging influence or effect: sweeping changes.
2. Moving in or as if in a wide curve: a sweeping gesture; a sweeping glance.
3. Indiscriminate; wholesale: sweeping generalizations.
4. Overwhelming; complete: a sweeping victory.
Why am I telling you this?
Incidentally, my 7 years old (2nd grade level) nephew is learning this particular word in his homework. He needs to make a sentence out of this particular word-definition. The plot thickens when we consulted a friend's 5th grade daughter about this particular word-definition, and she admits that this is a difficult word to make a sentance out of even for her.
