Macmillan Dictionary for Adva

A dictionary no matter how good, should be consider as a "floatation device". It is good to have at first, or when the water becomes too treacherous. English words are highly mutable, and lexicographers are constantly having to play the game of catching up. An interesting word I learn most recently is "swift-boated". Thanks to Thomas Friedman and his article "Swift Boated by Bin Laden"

With the Internet, it makes a little sense to own an unabridged dictionary, but one can still get one if you have all the time in the world. To look up a word in this massive un-portable dictionary takes extra effort. Locating a word in this dictionary is almost like search a needle in a haystack, and you need to stay focused, it is so easy to get sidetracked by other more interesting words along the way.

An unabridged dictionary is not aimed for anyone to carry along. It often stays home, sitting on the desk (preferably not on the shelf). A laptop can be more massive while not everyone owns a a hand-held computer, not to say either is more expensive than a printed dictionary. Even though Internet-based dictionaries sometimes come in handy, they do have their own disadvantages. Many have the experience that one gets millions of messages but only a simple solution is needed. Most on-line dictionaries do not offer language notes or pictures.
Lots of English teachers encourage students to use printed dictionaries. One of their reasons is that you can learn other words in the neighborhood of the word entry you are interested in. It's not distraction. At least it does not have pop-up ads, which might not keep you focused.

怎麼讀?"ttp://georgechen.idv.tw/wordpress/?p=92
