Shen Kuo was a polymath(博學者) Chinese scientist(科學家) and statesman(政治人物) of the Song Dynasty (960–1279). Excelling in many fields of study and statecraft(治國的才能), he was a mathematician(數學家), astronomer(天文學家), meteorologist(氣象學家), geologist(地質學家), zoologist(動物學家), botanist(植物學家), pharmacologist(藥理學家), agronomist(農藝學家), ethnographer(人種學家), encyclopedist(百科全書編輯家), and poet(文學家/詩人). general（軍事家/將軍, diplomat(外交家), hydraulic engineer(水利工程師), inventor(發明家), academy chancellor(秘書長), finance minister(財政部長), and governmental state inspector(監察委員).以今天的學術地位而言，可謂集12個博士於一身．
