"躺著學英文" 讀後整理

文章 Kooper »

For me, I try to make my "Chinese Life" into "English Life" as much as possible. Always watch movies with English subtitles only, read every Monday's New York Times only, and listen to English song only.
However, I wonder how much have I improved. Maybe I've got less English and lost more Chinese...

I am sure you have improved, only that you are not aware of it.

Learning can be a Catch-22 question of "how?" and "how much?". English learners are often forced to be omnivorous. Compounded with the fact that native speakers can be very "tricky" in their communication style. Perhaps as a consolation to those dreaded with the process, just remember this, anything worth learning has to be difficult.

not sure why "how" and "how much" is a Catch-22 situation. To me, they are sequential questions. First decide "how" and then decide "how much"

What is a Catch-22 situation? Are there any Catch-1 to Catch-21s?

Hi Rock, you must be joking....

According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English,

a Catch-22 situation is an impossible situation that you cannot solve because you need to do one thing in order to do a second thing, but you cannot do the second thing until you have done the first.

Example provided in the dictionary: It's a Catch-22 situation - without experience you can't get a job and without a job you can't get experience.

The same meaning of the word "catch" in Catch-22 echos in the commonly heard phrase of "So, what is the catch?" If the deal is indeed that good, the salesman may reply: "There is no catch"

Among other things, Catch-22 is a general critique of bureaucratic operation and reasoning. Resulting from its specific use in the book, the phrase "Catch-22" is common idiomatic usage meaning "a no-win situation" or "a double bind" of any type. Within the book, "Catch-22" is a military rule, the self-contradictory circular logic of which, for example, prevents anyone from avoiding combat missions. In Heller's own words:

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind.

看得出來Kooper和Rock都是認真的好學生說
上YOYO聚會勤快 下課又認真整理筆記
Lydia

Gavin :baby:

Any learning advice that does not put all the 補習班 out of business probably isn't that good.
