Say something instead of "Yes"

文章 Sherry Liao »

Yesterday, Luis' "Certainly" made me start to think of this question: When we agree with somebody, or would simply like to give a positive response, what can we say in addition to "Yes" (or yeah or yea or yep or yup…)?

The following are the ones I could think of (Of course they have different degrees of intensity or should be used in different situations):

OK
Sure / Sure thing
Of course
No problem
I guess so / I think so
You bet
Surely
You are right
I know
I am with you
That'll be fine
Totally
Agreed / I agree
Looks that way
I'm down for that
No kidding
I second that motion
Good call / Good idea
You're telling me
Right / That's right
That's just what I was thinking
Indeed
You got it
That's the plan
By all means
All right
True / That's true
Fair enough
Maybe / Maybe so
No doubt about that
Makes sense / That makes sense
Exactly
Have it your way
Absolutely
Definitely
There you go
That's for sure
By all means

Any other suggestions?

Brain stroming time.

Sounds good/ great/ wonderful/ Fantastic
Not bad. / Not a bad idea.
Fine by me.

However, this "I'm down for that." from Sherry's list sounds weird to me. In my imagination, I would think "I'm up for that." is more possible. Hey, wait, I just found anyone!!!

That's possible.

Precisely.
Correct.
You're telling me?
Tell me about it.
Tell me something I don't know.
That's what I'm talking about.
Now we're talking.
Yeah, what else is new?
Bingo.
Hell yeah.
You don't say!
Uh-huh.

Speaking of which, here is another African American usage: "True dat." (It means "That's true.")

Some might think African American usages are not worth learning. Actually, they are quite useful in many aspects. For example, you have to know the meaning of "True dat" to catch on to the last paragraph of this article:

Exactly!

但為什麼You're telling me?

就像You're telling me!

Tell me something I don't know. 和 Yeah, what else is new?

Word up - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=word+up

Dah pretty ladies around the world
Got a weird thing to show you,
So tell all the boys and girls.
Tell your brother, your sister
And mama too, cause they’re
About to go down
And you’ll know just what to do.

Wave your hands in the air
Like you don’t care, glide by
The People as they start to look and stare.
Do you dance, do your dance quick
Mama, come on baby, tell me what’s
The Word, ah – word up,
Everybody say when you hear the call
You got to get it underway,
Word up, it’s the code word,
No matter where you say it,
You’ll know that you’ll be heard.

Now all you sucker. D.J.’s
Who think you’re fly
There’s got to be a reason
And we know the reason why.
And act real cool
But you got to realise
That you’re acting like fools.
If there’s music we can use it
We need to dance.
We don’t have that time
For psychological romance
No romance
No romance
No romance for me mama
Come on baby tell me what’s the word.
Ah – word up,
Everybody say when you hear the call
You got to get it underway.

Dial “L” for low...
Come on, all you people say...
Word up – word up
I am not abandoning Yoyo, I am just dancing slowly away from it.

Dear Rock,
Who's the teacher?....you?...haha....I don't remember when was the last time I went to the meeting.....
Don't get angry with me your majesty.... I miss you all very much~

Dear Sherry,
I wish I could, I wish I might.
Even though I can sneak out to the meeting this Wednesday during my one-hour dinner break,... I'm afraid I cannot stay for long. oh BTW, I work on the 3rd floor now ^__^

the Georgia, who misses y'all a lot... *smack*
