"big" is just what it is, pure and simple.
It is an adjective used to describe anything that is over-sized.
This word feels more primal, therefore it has slightly more emotional underpinnings.

"large" is a word that often used to emphasize it's size or more precisely it's relative size when compare to other existing object in the same category.

"huge" is used to describe something that is unusually large.

When describing size it is best not to under or over exaggerate.
To get it right, it takes some observations and practices.

Regarding difference between LARGE and BIG, here is something I quoted from a book "Big & Large Are Different - 英文同義字 大大不相同", written by a Japanese 清水建二.

Big和large的關係, 簡而言之, 就像little和small一樣, 前者具有主觀的 情感的要素, 而後者則包含有客觀的 物理性的要素.

Large和small一樣, 僅論及東西物理性的大小或寬度, 可以說是不帶有感情因素, 無色透明的單字.

How do you know the 情感的色彩 did not come from the word "life"?
