暗戀 & 單戀 in English

文章 Kooper »

Can anyone tell me how to say 暗戀 in English?

Below are some possible answers I got from the Web, but I don't know whether they are correct and which one is the most common expression.

Expressed as a verb:

to be secretely in love with someone [This one is from dictionary, the only one I am sure is correct.]
to have a secrete crush on someone
to love someone stealthily

Expressed as a noun:
secret love

If I want to say 兩個人互相暗戀對方, can I say "They are secretely in love with each other."?
To me, this sentence sounds like 兩個人偷偷談戀愛, not like 兩個人互相暗戀對方.
Is there a better way to express the idea?

Hi Both,

I am new friend and would like to join the discussion. Hope you don't mind.

I heard they will say "crush on" frequently.

I think the sentence could write in below:

They both crush on each other secretly.

What do you think?

Hi Fox,
Welcome to join our discussion on the forum or attend our regular meetings in person. :ssmile:
By the way, crush could also be used as a verb. Here is what I got from Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English.
crush on somebody: to have a feeling of romantic love for someone, especially someone you do not know well
Ex: a guy in my class that I'm crushing on

to carry a torch for somebody [informal]: to be in love with somebody, especially when this feeling is secret or unrequited [MSN Encarta Dictionary]

You could tell from the definition that we can use this expression to refer to either 暗戀 or 單戀

Aslo, from definitions of the phrase in various dictionaries, I found some expressions for 暗戀 or 單戀.

to secretly love or admire someone -->暗戀 [Longman] [Collins COBUILD]
to be lin love with someone who cannot or does not love you --> 單戀 [Macmillan]
continue to feel the pain of unreciprocated love for --> unreciprocated love 單戀 [Answer.com]
to be in love with someone unrequitedly [The Free Dictionary by Farlex]

If you describe someone as lovesick, you mean that they are so in love with someone who does not love them, that they are behaving in a strange and foolish way. [Collins COBUILD]

If you have unrequited love for someone, they do not love you. --> unrequited love [n] 單戀 [Collins COBUILD]

Other words for 單戀 found on the Internet but not in the dictionaries -
one-sided love
one-sided love affair
unreturned love

Other words for暗戀 found on the Internet but not in the dictionaries -
unrevealed love
unspoken love (?)
