關於hope的用法

文章 Anson »

(1)I hope that you will have fun on your vacation.
(2)At the end of his letter, Jack wrote: p.s. I hope you'll write back soon!
我想請問究竟哪一個用法才是正確的呢?
hope後可以直接加will嗎?
謝謝!

都對
hope 可當完全及物動詞(vt),that 所引導的名詞子句,作 hope的受詞。底下那句是因為 that 被省略。

1. I hope (that) you will have fun on your vacation.
2. At the end of his letter, Jack wrote: p.s. I hope (that) you'll write back soon!

昨天花了點時間搜尋, 上面提到的字典已經買不到了, 不過仍可在Longman的
Dictionary of Common Errors找到相同的內容, 該字典可在PChomeOnline書店
買到 http://shopping.pchome.com.tw/?mod=bsto ... _NO=IEAB02
今天在誠品市政府店也有看到,一時衝動就買下來了,回家才發現在PCHome買便宜
80圓  這本的優點是按照字母排列, 體積也不大, 所以很容易使用. :D

a quote from an English usage dictionary - Guide to English Usage (Longman):

Hopefully: Besides meaning “in a hopeful way’ (They waited hopefully for
the results), this now very commonly means “it is hoped” (Hopefully they
will arrive in time.) If you use it, be careful to leave no room for
ambiguity between the two possible meanings. (They will leave hopefully
in the morning might mean either that they will leave with optimism, or
that they will succeed in leaving.)

I quoted from another website:

Hopefully or I Hope?

Hopefully is an adverb which means what it ought to--"full of hope" or "characterized by hope." It normally modifies verbs.

Nonstandard English sometimes substitutes the word hopefully for I hope (or some other subject with the verb hope).

Correct: They listened hopefully for the sound of the rescue party.
(They listened with hope)

Incorrect: Hopefully, they will come in time.

Correct: I hope they will come in time.

PS. Thanks for Kooper's sharing. It's a very good reminder to us so we may use those common words in a precise manner.

Hi Lydia,

Thanks for giving me some feedbacks, or I was kind of like making a monologue.

It might be a little bit too strict to say that using "hopefully" to mean "I hope or it is hoped" is incorrect, I would rather call it informal based on what I read from the English usage dictionary and what you quoted from website. Indeed, I did hear some of my foreign colleagues use "hopefully" this way during meeting.

剛剛Linda提到的分手歌 I will always love you中hope的用法似乎違背前述hope的使用原則, 兩處均未加will. 是否是因為它是歌詞的緣故?
By the way, I think
"I hope life treats you kind."
"I hope you have all you've dreamd of."
are very good farewell sentences.

I Will Always Love You -- Dolly Parton with Vince Gill (Words and Music by Dolly Parton)

If I should stay I would only be in your way
So I'll go but I know I'll think of you each step of the way
And I will always love you I will always love you

Bitter-sweet memories that is all I am taking with me
Goodbye please don't cry
Cause we both know that I'm not what you need
But I will always love you I will always love you

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope that you have all you've dreamed of I wish you enjoy and I wish you happiness
But above all of this I wish you love
Oh oh and I will always love you I will always love you
Yes I will always love you I will always love you

Hope is a small city in Hempstead County, Arkansas, United States. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 10,467.[1] The city is the county seat of Hempstead CountyGR6.

It is notable primarily as the birthplace of the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton (see Bill Clinton Birthplace). At the 1992 Democratic National Convention, Clinton ended his acceptance speech by saying, "I believe in a place called Hope" The city tagged this statement as their unofficial motto. The city converted its railroad depot to a museum featuring the life and accomplishments of President Clinton.

Guess mine is not the first heart broken,
my eyes are not the first to cry I'm not the first to know,
there's just no gettin' over you
Hello, I'm just a fool who's willing to sit around
and wait for you
But baby can't you see, there's nothin' else
for me to do I'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's nowhere to hide,
since you pushed my love aside I'm not in my head,
hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you,
hopelessly devoted to you
My head is saying "fool, forget him",
my heart is saying "don't let go"
Hold on to the end, that's what I intend to do
I'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's nowhere to hide,
since you pushed my love aside I'm not in my head,
hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you,
hopelessly devoted to you
