colon 冒號

文章 judah852 »

There's one question. I always can't figure out the answer.
Can you guys help me?
Thank you so much.
Here is the question.

We usually type in school number, name, instructor's name on cover page of a project that we do on computer and print it out.
In Chinese, of course you need to add it.

姓名:張無忌
學號:953343
老師: 金毛獅王

In English, i don't know.
Do i need to add a colon between Name and my name?
ex:
----------------------1
ESL 5A
Name Sam
Instructor Bob
----------------------2
ESL : 5A
Name : Sam
Instructor : Bob

Which one is correct? And why?
I can't figure out the answer.

Is there any reason for choosing option 2?
Or there's no reason, just follow it.

Thank you anyway.

I don't know if there is a reason for it, but for me it's a no-brainer. The business letters we write everyday and, if my memory serves me correctly, letters we received from other countries all follow this rule.

Also, when I was new I was told to always leave no space before a colon, and put two spaces or a tab after a colon, like this:

Proprietor: xxx corporation

I think you can also find out this rule in many documents.
