I assume you must be burning the midnight oil last night for the coming exam.
BTW, I would use the verb OVERSLEEP to describe your case.

I've finished all the 70 pages without trying to figure out what those medical terminologies are.chiron 寫:BTW, I think the novel is not easy to read with those medical terms. How many of you finish all the reading??
Hi Janet,janet12tw 寫:3. What’s so funny about this sentence on page 17, “although you do get Brownie points for tenacity”? Can you translate it into Chinese in the most appropriate term?
According to the Wikipedia, it says the term "Brownie points" in modern (21st century) usage are a hypothetical social currency, which can be accrued by doing good deeds or earning favour in the eyes of another, often one's superior. It can be translated into 印象分,指由於做好事而得到的非物質性的獎勵(來自鐵路建設用語,為評價員工“優點”、“缺點”的體系). And I think the whole sentence can be translated into "雖然你的堅持得到我精神上的支持".
4. Why does Anna mention “a rainbow might … big mahogany desk” on page 18? Is there any implication?
5. What does the sentence mean on page 26, “decimate the glass ceiling at the Bank of Boston”?
In the dictionary, the glass ceiling means "the imaginary barrier that stops women, or other groups, from getting the best jobs in a company, etc. although there are no official rules to prevent them from getting these jobs (無形限制,無形頂障(婦女等在職務升遷上遇到的無形障礙)). So Sara's sister is very outstanding in her job.
6. Why did Sara say “Brian is an obelisk” on page 34?
7. What does the sentence mean on page 36, “when she smiles at me, it doesn’t reach her eyes”?
8. As Kate showed her T-shirt and said “it is a psychedelic tie-dye, with a crab on the front, and the word Cancer” on page 37, why did Sara reply “you’re a Leo” as if she was going to cry?
Because Kate made fun of herself by wearing the T-shirt with the star sign cancer and the symbol of a crab. She wants to show that it is like a crab to have the disease cancer. But her mom doesn't find anything funny about it and replies her "your star sign is Leo, not cancer."
Good for you! God, you miss all the fun of this book.Kooper 寫:I've finished all the 70 pages without trying to figure out what those medical terminologies are.chiron 寫:BTW, I think the novel is not easy to read with those medical terms. How many of you finish all the reading??
Anyway, I suggest members see the movie in advance to get the rough concept of this novel, that will help you read this book faster if you don't have so much time. Or you can find a Chinese version and compare two versions directly if you are as lazy as I.chiron 寫:Good for you! Dear members,Kooper 寫:Dear study group members,
I reckon it's better we finish each book within half a year, or we might lose interest in it. So here I would like to propose that we discuss this book every five weeks and read 60 to 70 pages each time. That is, reading two pages a day on average. By doing so, we will finish the book by the end of February, 2010, which is roughly half a year from now.
Here is the proposed discussion timeline. (Revised on Sep 12th)
1. 9/13
2. 10/18
3. 11/22
4. 12/27
5. 1/31
6. 3/7
Please let me know your thoughts on it. Thanks.
Hi Chirn and Ivy,Kooper 寫: Dear members,
I'm thinking about further speed up our reading pace so that we could finish it one meeting earlier; that is, we could be done with it on Jan-31st. Six months seems to be too long for me to stay interested in one novel. Here is my new proposal.
1. 9/13
2. 10/18
3. 11/22 (- p.216)
4. 12/27 (p.217 - p.316)
5. 1/31 (p.317 -p.407)
Please let me know your thoughts on it.
