YOYO-ISG 101024 TV series, Desperate Housewives

文章 chiron »

We will discuss the 2nd episode of the 1st season on 10/24, so please prepare by taking notes of at least 3 good sentences, words or phrases worth learning, and posting your summary or any reflection about the 2nd episode under this post. Remember not to repeat others' words, so we can save more space.

Below are questions we haven't finished yet on 10/3. We may continue from these ones.

1. Why is the TV series called “’Desperate’ Wives”? Why are they desperate? Explain from your personal viewpoints.
2. Compare this TV series with “Sex and the City”. What are their common places?
3. What do these 4 women (LYNETTE, CARLOS, BREE, SUSAN)/and their families stand for? Do they reveal any American typical values?
4. What's the core value of this drama since you have seen 2 episodes already? What does it want to convey?

p.s. The excerpt from Toshi’s previous topic may bring us hint toward question 1, as below:

So, in the U.S. we have more stuff than ever before, but polls show that our national happiness is actually declining. Our national happiness peaked sometime in the 1950s,58 the same time as this consumption mania exploded. Hmmm. Interesting coincidence.

p.s.2 Remember the meeting starts from 8 o’clock. And for any problems about where to get the film, please refer to our first TV series meeting.
Please call me Na'vi!

Ex: Barry had been D.C.'s mayor for 12 years before he was put into prison for involvement with drugs in 1990. This time he was elected again. I just don't understand why people voted for him. He simply doesn't have a good track record.

I think the trouble didn't take place at Lynette's doorstep but at the woman's doorstep.
