_______ have kidnapped two westerners in Niger. NPR XXXXX reports captives who are believed to be French men were driven away from a restaurant to a capital where it’s feared that Al Qaeda now has a foothold. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the latest abduction of foreigners in Niger. Kidnappings are rare in the Capital-_______, which is easier to police than vast deserted region where others have been abducted. Witnesses and security forces said the westerners were bundled in a four-wheel drive vehicle by armed and turban men who busted into a crowded bar restaurant. Last September an Al Qaeda affiliate claimed it seized (five) nationals and two other foreigners in northern Niger. The captives are still kept in held most likely over the border in Mali. It’s not possible to confirm whether the latest incident in Niger is also linked to the group known as Al Qaeda Islamite Migrate. This would mark the first in the West African capital.

“ ... reports the captives who are believed to be... “
“ … a restaurant in the capital... “
“Kidnappings are rare in the capital, Niamey, … “
“ … than vast desert regions where... “
“ … the Westerners were bundled into... “
“ … by armed and turbaned men who burst into... “
“ … it seized five French nationals... “
“The captives are still being held, … “
“ … the group known as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.”
“This would mark a first … “

You always amaze me with your English. :D Hope to see you at an ISG Skype meeting one day!

Hi Jackson, here are my notes:

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is pledging financial support to the country’s flood-stricken Queensland State.”
“Gillard toured the region today and spoke to reporters in the flooded town of St George, where she talked about the massive reconstruction that would have to be undertaken once the flood waters recede.“
“It’s gonna take some time here; we got wide-scale flood waters here in Queensland and that’s gonna put pressure on Queensland and local communities… “
Weeks of heavy rains have submerged an area the size of Germany and France; some two hundred thousand people have been affected by the floods.

**”Water” can be plural when referred to bodies of water or multiple floods.

You listen well even to a strong Australian accent! Amazing!

(1) "An anti-American Shiite cleric whose militia once battled American forces ... "
(The announcer missed the word "once" and started to say "battled", but stopped himself mid-word and go back to "once". :D )
(2) " ... for fear of the unknown and to start afresh in their native South."
(3) "Human rights implications", "political implications", etc. denote the effects certain action may have in the given sphere. Here "implication" is very close to "consequence". It's a big word so use it on big stuff. A Canadian paper's headline goes: "Implications of the 'Chinese mother' school of oppression". I guess that article about parenting is still getting people riled up.

Hi Janet,

Nice to hear your voice again yesterday! Here are my notes for the transcript:

An anti-American Shiite cleric whose militia once battled the American forces is marking his return to Iraq today. xxx delivered his first speech since returning to Iraq after 4 years of self-imposed excel in Iran. He spoke to thousands in the holy city of Najaf, calling the US, Israel and Britain common enemies. But he also asked supports to give Iraq's new government a chance to honor an agreement, that all US troops be out of Iraq by year's end. A US embassy spokesman says there is nothing new in xxx's speech.

UN refugee agency reports a huge increase in the number of people leaving Northern Sudan to return to their ancestral homes in the south ahead of a week long independence referendum that begins tomorrow. xxx in Geneva reports the number of returnees has doubled since mid-December, now stands at 120,000.
