Some of Yoyo English Club's minor problems

文章 technobabel »

Time to confront the truth, even if it hurts.

1. It is not a lean mean English learning machine.
2. Members are too friendly, (Mistakes are often politely ignored)
3. There is no incentive to improve.
4. Not all member wears their thinking cap.
5. Unable to identify and prevent recurring mistakes systematically.
6. Have yet to perfect the collective learning experience.
7. Too many questions end up being "unasked"

Since knowing is half the battle, looks like I've done my part, and the rest is up to you.
I am not abandoning Yoyo, I am just dancing slowly away from it.

Part II

8. It is possible to "improve" superficially with tricks and shortcuts, but a solid foundation takes a long time to build. What exactly is solid foundation?
9. English skill is only one link in a long chain. For some people it may or may not be the weakest link.
10. Everything else you (don't) know will reflect on your English proficiency.
11. It seems that error collection, correction and prevention can be a very time consuming, labor intensive and often very excruciating process.
12. In the end, one just have to unlearn their mistakes by themselves.
13. Let's face it, Yoyo just isn't a very consistent English learning resource content provider. At best, it is only a stage for showcasing what you and your peers know. That itself should be a very good motivational force.

Part III

Looks like I am going to be talking to myself for at least a while. Frankly, if these words look strange to you, then I must admit that they look strange to me as well. It is almost like they aren't mine. I have reason to believe that the Phantom of Yoyo English Club speaks through me. So, if you do not like what you see, don't take it out on me. After all, I am only a messenger.

Of all the skills, being able to talk about selected issue endlessly even when there is no justifiable reason to do so, may not be highly promotable virtue. But, a topic in this forum just doesn't float by itself like a boat on water. Often, it will drift and sink, not survive and thrive. Is that a true reflection of Taiwan's current state of minds? Nothing gets any attention unless it is a part of a juicy sensationalistic diabolical scandal.

Coherent but not too fluent is better than fluently incoherent.

Yup, Wayne gives us some important but easy neglected points.
English learning requires a kind of self motivate spirit, especially after we graduated - when there is no pressure to pursue a high schore in English; when what we know now is enough to cope with most of the situation in our daily life.

I feel ashame to admit that even if I came abroad for nearly a year, my English is not quite improved. See, even though I'm in such an environment where I'm forced to use English to communicate with others.
The thing is that we should be self-motivated. Reading the article and showing up in the meeting is not quite enough.

To see in the bright side, the good thing I benefit from YOYO is the confidence to speak in front of the others in English. Some of you have suffered my poor English    But I should say that is a good start of learning English in one aspect. Then, what's next? Maybe we can get together and think about it sometimes.

HA... I have hidden in the sand for such a long time. I should also face my problems - the same as listed above
Thanks Wayne for standing out and pointing out these problems.

Perhaps I am being unreasonably demanding, but come to think of it, do you really want me to be lenient? No doubt, that would be a lot easier.

Again, let me reply with a song. I don't know why this song makes sense in this situation. The words just seem so fitting.

Artist: REM
Song: Losing My Religion

Ooh, Life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much, I set it up.

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep a view
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper
Of every waking hour I'm
Choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool,
fool
Oh no I've said too much, I set it up

Consider this, consider this
The hint of the century
Consider this
The slip, it brought me
to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies
Come flailing aground
Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep a view
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I hadn't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
To Try, Cry, Fly, Try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream
I am not abandoning Yoyo, I am just dancing slowly away from it.
