What's the value of YOYO English Club?

文章 Kooper »

Dear YOYOs,

Recently, meeting attendance increases dramatically, both on Wednesday and Saturday. The increase is actually a double-edged sword. Actions may need to be taken to alleviate its adverse effect.

Before making any change, I would like to conduct a small survey to know more about your thoughts. Here is my question:

What do you think is the crucial value of YOYO? What makes it stand out from other English learning groups? What brings you to meetings over and over again rather than hang out with friends or relax at your cozy room?

The question may seem irrelevant at first sight. However, your answer will help me decide how to address the issue we are facing.

actually i don't know the value thing. the most important thing for me is the discussion time should be long enough, and the quality to some extent would be great. of course, being a man, the presence of as many pretty women as possible will always be a plus haaa 8)
i might be a cynic and, a sceptic as well but, i'm definitely not a bad person!!

I could just answer the last question  :

Attend YoYo meetings to learn more articles bring me knowledge & information before learning from magazines & newspapers  .

To be the representative or host is not happy thing all the time, but, that always gain Engish or presentation-skill improvement to me, give me brave / couragement to speak / share my thought to public :ssmile: .

M/T, adopt one sentence from Sr. member Angle lin's posting to share with YoYos  :

I was taught to strive not because there were any guarantees of success but because the act of striving is in itself the only way to keep faith with life. Madeleine Albright
我所學到的努力並非是因為有任何成功的保證, 而是因為努力的行為本身是保持人生信念的唯一途徑。 麥德琳‧歐布萊特

Dear Kooper,
Our cute Sherry made some posters to let more people to know Yoyo, and we just got many people. Isn't it the thing we were expecting? Sometimes we have few people; sometimes we get a lot. Both situations are interesting. Or do you prefer we always get the same people?

Besides, I don't know there are any single-bladed sword in the world.

What Kooper's trying to do is not telling us what he prefers, but asking what's the best for us.

It's good to have more people than we had at the beginning of 2008;
however, recently we have more and more new faces coming to the
meeting unexpectedly, hence the host has a lot more to carry on his
shoulders, and if anyone has noticed, we have less time for discussion
when there are more groups, not to mention that sometimes we don't
have as much space to keep different groups far enough not to disturb
one another, as a result of which , some of us will need to raise our
voices higher and higher to beat the voices from the other groups, which
grows even bigger like a snowball effect when we speak a bit louder
to make ourselves heard clearly enough.

Imagine this: new comers felt good about this club and told their friends
to come out of good intentions, and there's this one crazy day when we
have around 10 or 15 new comers, plus the regular members, the host
will have to handle 30 to 40 people on his own (because we get all excited
and forget about the host.. ha.. now don't say that's impossible... given
the scene we had last Wednesday, apparently our host had a rough time
settling us down with our mouths shut, didn't he?...) If this day comes, how
shall we arrange the limited space we can make use of? Will the regular agenda
make sense? Shall the coffee shop give us a better discount or give out treats
on the house (this is important too~~)?....

Therefore, some actions could be taken to solve
these problems; not taking any actions at all could also be an option.
Kooper does not want to make a decision without asking, so here he is.

Well, as for me, YOYO is 70% the place where I can meet friends and
share feelings, on the basis of not getting too close or involved with
each other's lives. Sometimes I need someone to talk to , to get
some burdens off my chest, I would pick a YOYO friend because I
know this person won't tell a soul in my daily life (of course this
friend has to be trust-worthy,... and a little dull...hahaha ...
whomever I'm referring to, don't get mad pal cuz actually I'm thankful
to you and this is a compliment you deserve).
The other 30% is of course a class I can go to whenever I want,
in order to practice oral conversation so that I don't lose my touch.

There Kooper, i said it.

There is no doubt that having more people in the meeting excites me; however, it is a challenge to achieve it without sacrificing meeting quality or the things that bring frequent attendees to the meeting. What've happened to HAPPY should serve me as a warning. I am trying not to repeat their mistakes.

The point is, what makes YOYO differ from other English groups? Why join YOYO but not others?

Honestly, I always stick to a place since I do not like change. That's why I stay here. But I would also like to share some opinions which make me think YOYO is so remarkable:

1. Most of the people I meet here are good at English and have passion for studying, which offers good motivation for me to keep studying hard.

2. YOYOs come from all walks of life. But they have one thing in common: they are all well-educated and have got some experiences at work, which makes the discussion at the gatherings always intriguing and absorbing.

3. YOYO changes leader every year, and the hosts of regular meetings prepare topics (or even write articles for topics) by themselves, which sets a good example of a spontaneous organization. (Trust me, it is not easy. We have to get many good quality members, but we do.)

4. YOYO has got elite members who dedicate themselves to YOYO, checking the writing of topics and answering questions about English.

Recently the attendance has exploded and the gatherings become somewhat bustling. There is somehow a doubt that it could be a "miasma" to the quality of discussion. Maybe it could. I am just curious about others' opinions on this part.

value of YOYO:
practice English
every member can be a host
make friends
comfortable environment
variety of topics
people have different of thinking

all of them are important

What brings you to meetings over and over again rather than hang out with friends or relax at your cozy room?
The most important reason is people.
People are nice and friendly.
I like them.
I am happy to be a member.

What is the value of Yoyo English Club?
Yoyo is a good platform for making connections, and that is one of its value.
A lot of what we do here involve making connections, socially, sensically and sometimes culturally.
Putting two and two together, isn't always easy, obvious or worth the effort, but that is the very act of learning.
Let me go out on a limb to make a connection that is less than obvious.
For example:
Since today's new comers, may very well be tomorrow's hosts,
and you never know who's gonna to drop by and have a chat with you.
This song seems to capture this particular familiar spirit.

You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger

I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they wouldn't teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold
Turned into a shining band of gold

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Mephistopheles is not your name
But I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
And you will see it come to its fruition

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your face to alabaster
Then you will find your servant is your master

And you'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around your finger
You'll be wrapped around your finger
I am not abandoning Yoyo, I am just dancing slowly away from it.
