Hello YoYos. Here I would like to initiate a column used specifically for the
discussion of English word usage. First of all, I would like to share some
reference books I have with you. They are all very informative and will
help us to use word in a more accurate and correct way. The first one is
“Longman Language Activator.”
這是一本與眾不同的字典, 在這本字典中很多字都查不到, 因為這並不是它存在的
目的, 它的設計是將意思相近的字放在一起, 並指出彼此間用法的差異. 例如描述
一個人肥胖有很多字, 你知道何時該用何字才適當嗎?以下摘自該字典的解釋:
Fat: the word fat is considered impolite and should only be used
when talking to close members of your family, close friends etc, or when
talking about people who are not present.
Pot-bellied: someone who is pot-bellied has a round stomach that
sticks out at the front, especially because they eat or drink too much, or
because they are suffering from having no food to eat for a long time.
Obese: extremely fat in a way that is dangerous to your health.
Large: a word meaning fat, used especially when you do not want
to say fat because it would be impolite.
Stout: someone, especially a middle-aged person, who is stout is
short and fat.
Plump: a word meaning fat, especially in a pleasant and attractive
way, often used when you do not want to say because it is impolite.
Chubby: someone who is chubby, especially a small child, is fat in
a pleasant, healthy-looking way.
Flabby: is a word for describing a part of the body that is covered
in soft loose fat in a way that looks very unattractive.
總結來說, 說一個人有啤酒肚用pot-bellied, 極度且不健康的肥胖用obese, 委婉地
說某人肥胖用large或plump, 又矮又胖用stout, 嬰兒肥嘟嘟很可愛的樣子用
chubby, 描述身體某部分的肥肉又多又鬆用flabby.

Before the entire Yoyo community plunges into a highly efficient means of systematic English vocabulary acquisitions, let's take one last good look at an example of a highly unsystematic approach... that boggles the minds, yours and mine.Lydia 寫:我們對英語單字用法的學習將更有系統 !

The recent global financial crisis reminded me of this video. I couldn't help listen to it (not watch it) again. Although this video only focuses on hobo issue, the event in 1929 it brings up is really thrilling, no, I mean creepy.technobabel 寫:Before the entire Yoyo community plunges into a highly efficient means of systematic English vocabulary acquisitions, let's take one last good look at an example of a highly unsystematic approach... that boggles the minds, yours and mine.
