5/6 (Sat.) Should Corporal Punishment be Abolished?

Session I: Should Corporal Punishment be Abolished?
Session II: Should Statues of Chiang Kai-shek be Removed?

Host: Dan

Session I:

Is Corporal Punishment necessary to discipline children or should it be abolished?

Corporal punishment is defined as physically hitting someone and is intended to cause pain or discomfort to the person. It’s sometimes called caning, spanking or paddling.

Corporal punishment is most often carried out on children, though a number of countries also allow it for convicted criminals and for discipline in prisons.

A total of 52 countries prohibit corporal punishment of children in all settings, including in schools and at home, while nearly 120 prohibit it in schools. Taiwan outlawed corporal punishment in schools 10 years ago.

Questions for Session I:

1. Do you believe use of corporal punishment is justified for children:

-- In all settings
-- Only at home
-- Never

2. If you agree with use of corporal punishment of children, do you think it should be meted out:

-- Only if the child commits a serious act, such as stealing or other crime.
-- In addition to the above, and if the child is caught lying or using foul language or misbehaving frequently or regularly failing to obey his or her parents, teachers or other authority figures.
-- In addition to the above, and if the child does poorly in school, including receiving low scores on tests or low grades on an assignments.

3. Why or why not do you believe in use of corporal punishment of children?

If you are for corporal punishment, do you believe:
-- It’s an effective means of discipline and helps prevent the child from repeating the offense.
-- It teaches the child right from wrong.
-- It immediately gets the child to stop the bad or delinquent behavior.
-- Other

If you are against corporal punishment, do you believe:
-- It hurts the child’s self-esteem and causes feelings of shame, hostility, mistrust and resentment.
-- It perpetuates the cycle of violence in society, can injure the child and could grow into child abuse.
-- It’s unnecessary--Instead of being hit, the child could be deprived of a privilege, such as not getting to play a video game; or merely have the authority figure explain why the behavior was wrong, evoking shame.
-- Other

Session II:

What Should Taiwan Do With Statues and Other Monuments to Chiang Kai-shek?

With the recent decapitations of statues of former president and dictator of Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek, and former engineer and member of the Japanese colonial government, Yoichi Hatta, there has been heightened debate about what to do about monuments to the former authoritarian regimes of Taiwan, especially monuments paying tribute to Chiang.

Questions for Session II

1. Do you believe Chiang was ultimately responsible for the 228 Massacre and also bears responsibility for the human rights abuses perpetrated during the White Terror period? Or do you think his more important deeds were to help build Taiwan into what it is today and to keep it safe from Communist revolutionaries and infiltrators?

2. Do you think the government should remove all remaining statues of Chiang Kai-shek and also close the CKS Memorial Hall? Why or why not?

3. Even if you agree that Chiang was a tyrant who should not be commemorated by a democratic country like Taiwan, do you think the statues and other monuments to Chiang are historical or cultural artifacts that should not be moved from their original locations? Or do you think that, at best, some of them should be placed in museums and be presented to visitors with truthful context about Chiang’s full record.

4. What specifically should be done with the CKS Memorial Hall?

-- It should remain as it is today, a monument to Taiwan’s post-war leader.
-- It should be converted into a museum celebrating and chronicling Taiwan’s difficult road to democracy and freedom.
-- It should be razed to the ground.

These two topics are great. I guess everybody has something to say.

I believe corporal punishment is useful if it's used carefully and skillfully. But, in the old days, some teachers handled it poorly so there were bad effects. The total abolishing is not the best policy, though. Corporal punishment, of course, cannot solve every problem, but, neither can love-- especially for those kids who already have too much love.

As for Chiang's statues, why not just sell them as scrap metal and make some money and donate the money to charity? I don't know if he was a good person or not. However, if he was a good person, he wouldn't mind donating his statues to the charity; if he was a bad person, then it serves him right.

It doesn't really matter to me if he was good or bad. I'm not that naive to believe the textbook of history. 8)

As a public school teacher for more than 20 years, I am successfully trained to be a person with no brain.
(I mean, just follow the rules conducted by the Education Bureau, by the principal. Don't think, never judge, or I would feel tortured.)

So, no matter what the policy towards corporal punishment is, I'll always find a way to survive.

As for statues of Chiang Kai-shek, I support that they should be removed.
The most important reason for this is ......they caused too much pain to the public..............because they're really really really ugly ........to the point you can't even stand to exist in the same place with them.

I've been to Russia, the statues there are artworks. Every single one of them has unique pose, and was aesthetically designed.

I guess it is probably more fair to compare the statues of Chiang Kai-Shek and the statues of Lenin,
( https://www.google.com.tw/search?q=leni ... 80&bih=629)

Then, it's not much different when comparing the statues of the two modern political figures. Right, they are all dull! :)

Japanese Americans are nice. They didn't do anything to this statue of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his dog, not even a drop of paint. That's true patriotism. No wonder it's the strongest country of the planet.

Attendee list: Dan (host), Rock, Michael, Iris, Nick (new comer), Jessica, Stephen, Catherine, Vincent, Tashi, Jason Jr., John, Luis, Steve.

I had a good time discussing things with you guys, politics or not. It seems we can handle this kind of topics well. Good for us.

Dan is really a good friend. He kept on telling us that we Taiwanese are doing fine; our freedom and democracy are better than China, even Singapore. Though he is curious about 228 and we want to kill the stigma, it's always good to share our ideas.

Looking forward to Dan's next hosting, if he has time. Many many thanks again.
