Kooper 寫:Divided Federal Reserve Is Inclined to Stand Pat

Guess what does the title mean?
Headline aside, there are some interesting expressions in the report. Let's also guess what they mean. :sun:

Divided: 指意見分歧的, 因為Fed有些人主張要盡快升息有些人則反對
is inclined to: 傾向於......(這個有學過)
stand pat: 這個我只能亂猜 我猜是"維持現狀"的意思

- It's a close call. => 這個好像時常聽到 我猜是平分秋色的意思, 指贊成和反對的人數差不多
- You don't want to be behind the eight ball of this one, and I think it's time to raise rates.=> 這個真的猜不到 我只能猜和撞球的術語有關
- a quarter-percentage-point increase would be "a drop in the bucket" => 應該就是指不會有太大的作用 就像一滴水掉進一桶水一樣不會有作用
- Inflation's stickiness at low levels removes pressure on the Fed to act pre-emptively =>指先發制人提前採取行動
to head off a surge in consumer prices

Hi Luis, did you just look up dictionaries? Your 2nd guess seems closer to the real meanings.

stand pat: Both Luis and Michael guessed it right. If you stand pat or stand pat on something, you refuse to make any changes or to change your position or opinion.

Here is a good explanation of the meaning of Behind The Eight Ball:

According to the video clip, the idiom originates from a game called Kelly Pool (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_pool), in which the 8 ball cannot be touched until the last moment. If any ball is behind the eight ball, it makes it impossible to avoid penalty.

By the way, at the end of the clip, the speaker mentioned three other idioms with similar meaning to "behind the eight ball." Can you tell what they are?

Luis Ko 寫:"Obama Condemns Trump in Full-Throated Pitch for Clinton"
從字面上猜測,應該是指用喉嚨吼音量提高罵川普,就像某個人時常激動的時候,就pitch變很高,我很受不了這個人!
So, My guess was wrong, Kooper is right, 這裡的pitch 指的不是音量高八度的pitch, 而是指sales pitch 的 pitch

mm.. this one must be upper intermediate, because i couldn't really get them all haa~ 8)

by the way, i found the subtitle seems not the same, in some words, as the speaker says. i'm wondering if it's from native speaker or, even a native English speaker can't get every word of them sometimes. i know they might be able to understand what others say but, i always wonder if they can catch every word of them, every time?? if not, we don't have to either, do we?

Hi Luis,
The subtitle is possibly recognized and generated by software, not by human.

This guy in the video really talks way too fast!!! After listening to his talking, I feel the NPR news is much easier. hahaha.......

The second idiom is "up the creek" Of course I didn't figure it out by myself. I just happened to find it when I googled "behind the eight ball"

"Creek是溪流,以前這個習慣用語是up the creek without a paddle。 Paddle是槳,可以想像如果有人乘小船逆流而上手頭卻沒有槳,處境該有多難。使用這個習慣用語的人很快就省略了without a paddle,只是說up the creek來表達同樣的意思。" ( from google)

BTW, Kooper, I can not open the link of "Divided Fed is inclined to stand pat". So, you pay money to subscribe online Wall Street Journal?

Kooper: Hi Kat, I have a question. Are "pretty kettle of fish" and "fine kettle of fish" not commonly used these days? I looked up google news but found that only "different kettle of fish" seems to be kind of popular, but not the first two idioms. Is my understanding correct?

Kat: They're really out of fashion now. Brits are still using it, but not too many Americans. Maybe if you write about older generations. :)

These are Michael's line games on news headlines. Put here as records for future learning.

1. 猜動詞片語: How Germany ________ up against its European neighbors (這個片語的意思: used to talk about how good something is compared with something else)

2. 猜動詞片語: Hurricane Maria _____ _____ on Turks and Caicos islands before heading out to sea ( Maria颶風"衝向"Turks 和Caicos 島) 這題蠻難的,但答案本身是簡單的字。

(提示: the second word is "down", the verb is a four letter word, try it!)

3. 看新聞學片語: Hurricane Maria: US mainland is not out of the woods yet (是什麼意思呢?)

4. 新聞克漏字=>Yellen: I intend to ______ ______ my term as chair. (Fed主席葉倫說她會做完任期)

5. Pro-Trump media incensed over reports he struck deal with Dems on Dreamers

6. 看新聞學片語: Trump Jr. asks Secret Service to scale back his protection

7. 看新聞學片語: In terms of politics the Emmys join the award-show party late, after the Golden Globes, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys have all taken whacks at the Trump presidency.

8. "明知故問"英文有類似的說法嗎?

9. 新聞標題: To deter North Korea, we can't pussyfoot around

10. 看新聞猜單字: Violent crimes and murders increased in 2016 for a second c__________ year, FBI says

11. 看新聞猜單字: Why neighborhood toy stores are t________ while Toys R Us(玩具反斗城) goes bankrupt (請從句子的語意邏輯去猜)

12. 看新聞猜片語: Pope Francis takes ______ at Trump over DACA decision (教宗"批評"川普的決定)
